No, I'm not talking about Prometric's rules, or AICPA's rules. I'm talking about rules you need to know to take the CPA exam. These are based primarily on the experience of the CPA test takers.

I'll start off with one.

Rule#1: If something is on the CSO's, and you blow it off, you are guaranteed to see a material percent of it on your actual CPA exam. This is a variation of Murphy's law.

Hello
I am an international student studying in the states
I have been studying since Dec, 2011.
I spend 6 to 8 hrs a day for the FAR and REG section. I think I am dedicated to this thing...
Since I am studying with 2011 yaeger review, I worry if I am studying the wrong material.
Can anyone help me with this ?
I just want to ge some advices on changes in 2012 cpa exam.

I checked AICPA website and did not find any announcement on the changes to the exam except the one that is
effective in 2013.
Other than that, is there major differences in 2012 exam?

I just wanted to say hi, I'm Ashley. I graduated Dec 2011 and I am going to start studying for the CPA exam. I ordered Yaeger and I have to wait until Monday before it arrives. I currently work 25ish hours a week. I am a school bus driver so I work mornings/afternoons. Anyways, I have been trying to think of how I want to go about taking the exam. I sent in my application & transcripts so hopefully I will hear back soon. I was thinking of taking FAR in April, AUD in May, take the summer off (I might intern or maybe just enjoy it if I can't get an internship?) and then going after REG in October and BEC in November. I am wondering if I am drawing this thing out too long? Especially with the 18 month frame. I could have the worst time with BEC, just because it's last. I thought if I had to retake either of the first two, I would do it in the summer so that wouldn't mess up the rest of the schedule. Another thought I have is that I only work part time, so why couldn't I get this thing done and over with sooner? I just know that when I get an accounting job, I may never have a summer like the one coming. I'm not sure about studying for the exam during an internship. If I get the internship I am hoping for, then I really want to focus on that.

I am just trying to hear other people's perspectives. I only know one person who has taken the CPA exam in the last 25 years and she is pretty busy with work. I just don't know know how to approach the exam. I can't really decide what to do. I was thinking that the schedule I mentioned would allow me to also have free time... balance :). But I know I can push myself hard if I wanted to. Maybe you could tell me, is it harder to learn lots of information in a short time, or better in a longer period? Could someone learn better studying 30 hours versus 20 hours a week or vice versus? I would think there would be a threshold where after a certain amount of hours a week it would be impossible to retain it all. Okay, enough rambling on, please give me your advice. Please be nice, but honest with your answers :) I know it's a monster of a test and any feedback I get is GREATLY appreciated! I just want to make a good plan and get going on this thing.

P..s. Is it crazy that I am excited to start studying? I keep telling myself, you will regret this thought soon enough haha.

The reporting is stellar. I've gone through a few 20 MCQ practice sessions and am able to get a good grasp on my weak areas. The statistics are much more in-depth than the previous version.

Also, being able to copy and paste explanations saves me time on writing out explanations and then retyping them for a more friendly format.

Just wanted to say good job in these two areas.

I've tried the practice session and quiz section. I even see a symbol in the MCQ screen that references feedback but it doesn't seem to turn it on. What gives? (very likely user error)

Ok who in with me? I know a lot of people are probably taking the weekend off whether celebrating cause of passing scores or taking a few days off to recoupe from receiving failing scores, but I'm not!!!! Congratulations to those who have passed and don't let it get you down to those who didn't. If I can keep going after losing 3 out of my 4 credits, anybody can!

I'm sitting at the dealership waiting for my van to get an oil change with my iPhone loaded up with Wiley questions, notebook, and pencil in hand working away. After here I'm off to the library. FAR is going down on Monday!!!

Hi Everyone,
I've been using Gleim to study and it has worked well, but now they have changed their policy where you cannot order the online test bank unless it's part of a set. However, I'm in Spain until May, so I don't want to pay for shipping for a book or anything over here.

Does anyone know of study resources that are completely online (online book and lots of test questions, videos are optional). Also looking for something fairly cheap...Gleim is the cheapest, I usually pay $200-250 for everything, very no-frills but its all the info you need, I've passed both REG and BEC with Gleim. I want to take AUD in May when I get back to the states. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am scheduled to take AUD in May and FAR in July. I have until July 23rd to take both. I need to reschedule BEC but don't know when because of these 2 exams being so close to each other. Should I retake BEC in early April or wait until October? These exam fees are killing us, but I don't want to lose my knowledge of BEC so I think retaking it in April is probably best. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Also, I haven't even started studying for REG because of busy season, so I'll probably be retaking it in Q4. I have to take it on 2/25 unfortunately because of my NTS date.

FYI, YMMV

I'm a big fan of the Wiley textbooks, they helped me pass BEC and AUD. This past Christmas I got a Kindle Fire, and figured I'd get the REG ebook instead of the textbook. Unfortunately I'm having a really hard time following along in the ebook, as everything is outlined and bulleted; it makes everything squished together, it's a really confusing layout and difficult navigation. I'll be buying the textbook to use instead.

I have regular ebooks loaded on there and have no problem with them, I think the problem is the REG ebook is in outline style, which makes for an odd appearance in the Kindle.

With only 3 weeks to go until my originally scheduled date for FAR, I went into straight panic. I am only about 1/3 through Wiley, and haven't been doing enough practice questions. So after a mini breakdown this morning, I decided that the $35 reschedule fee was better than a $400 fail. And now I feel like I can be fully prepared.

It made me realize that if I am even thinking about rescheduling, the self doubt would kill me come test date -- so to anyone thinking about it, if you can afford to do it (without loss of a section), do it.

I am in Colorado, and it has snowed a good amount, and is still snowing.

I found the testing center phone number, but no one answered and there was no recording regarding the weather.

My question is: Do testing centers ever cancel/change a test date based on weather? If so, do they call or email the test takers before hand?

So, I finally have to take FAR and I am starting to use Becker self-study to get ready for my test in April. I have never used this type of study material before and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to utilize the self-study program? What worked and didn't work for you? Replies are much appreciated!!!

You must have missed my imposter issue the other day!

I take BEC Feb 26th. I can't take a break from this addiction I have to the CPA exam. I can't wait to be done and I have until June before I lose credit. So I am planning on punching this beast where it counts on the 26th... How is FAR studying going?

If I want to pass on my next REG attempt, I need to seriously consider finding a way to improve my long-term memory. Small details that are important to remember for this exam keep slipping away. For example, PHC test, S Corp requirements, Sec 179, Startup/Organization Costs, etc…. Yes, I can study those now and have them memorized by the end of the day. In fact, I know these now. But when I start to study my weak areas and try to become proficient there, I start to forget simple things. One day, I’ll do a set of practice questions and get a question on the PHC test. And I’ll be like, “Oh, I knew this.” So, that small little thing that I used to know has to be looked over again in order to put it back into my memory. And the cycle will keep going. I remember details and later on when I try to study new stuff, the old material gets tossed out of my brain. And so on…. As you can see from my REG grades, I’m not studying enough. I need to studying everything and remember everything. But my brain refuses to cooperate. Half of the people that take this test each window can pass this, so this shouldn't be THAT difficult. Not sure why this keeps happening to me.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening. How can I study and store this stuff in long-term memory so I never forget it?

Just one more test to pass and I’m a free man. I want to do this!!!

I haven't taken an exam yet. I read somewhere as soon as you put in your NTS number on the screen, you have 10 minutes to start the exam. Do they make you put in your NTS number as soon as you sit down? I would like to spend about 20 minutes before the time starts running writing down some things that will assist me in the exam, but I don't know if they allow that.

Currently, I'm basically a full time tax intern and I'm in my last semester of MAcc (taking 12 hours -- 3 are night classes). I was thinking about taking one part of the CPA before the June blackout because I really want to get the CPA over with before I start FT in the fall.

1. Given my situation, is it a good idea to try to study for and take one part of the exam in either April or May?
2. If so, which section should I take??
