I am interested in that and maximizing my future income. Is this a good designation to get? I figure if i get the CPA, I might as well go all out and get the CFA too.

I am compiling the info for my application and need a letter from my employer as well as 3 character reference letters. What do you have them say? Plenty of people want to say I am a character, LOL.

Just a short & sweet " I have known MLA for 3 years and find her to be of good moral character". Does anybody have an example they'd like to share?

I'm in MA and going for a non-reporting license, FWIW.

The NJCPA website says you need to have a signed statement of experience from all employers after obtaining your bachelors degree. (I graduated 3 years ago.)

This seems a bit silly if I worked a temp job where the work I did was unrelated to becoming a CPA. I worked at a design firm before that, and my old manager is no longer with the company. I have a year and a half of experience under my current manager who is a CPA, so I don't get why I need any more than that.

Does anyone have any personal experience with this? I don't even know how I would go about reaching out to employers I've long forgotten about and who I didn't stick around long enough to build a strong relationship with. And how would this work for people who graduated a long time ago?

Thanks to anyone who can shed a bit of light!

I am kind of freaking out.

My original goal was to obtain the CPA certificate in Delaware, not the license. I want the credential, not to practice. Therefore I ultimately do not want to have to do the work experience.

I have around 135 college credit hours (another reason why I chose to sit in Delaware to begin with). I passed all four sections of the exam in 2011.

Now I just realized (sigh), that Delaware is no longer a two tier state. After practically having a heart attack, I realized that Alabama and Montana still offer the certificate.

My questions---
1: Can I ultimately transfer my passing credit to Alabama or Montana and get the certificate?
2: It looks like I will now need 150 credit hours to transfer the credit, is that right?
3: Assuming I need those credits, can I take any classes I want.. like Portuguese? I think I have all the accounting course requirements but obviously I would take those too.

If anyone can offer some guidance, it would be SERIOUSLY appreciated.

I passed all my exams and started filling out the NY license paperwork. I work in the private sector for a company that is based in the UK. My boss has UK qualifications and is a member of AICPA, but since she's not a state licensed CPA she can't certify my 6 years of work experience.
So, I was wondering if there are any states that I can transfer my exam scores to, and she could certify my work experience.

Thanks

There is a 3 year, part time program that would allow me to graduate with a law degree and then I'd sit for the bar exam. The school is not ABA accredited so I would only be licensed in my state, Tennessee. I already have an MBA and Masters of Finance.

Am I nuts? 3 years of law school and then a bar exam? I would focus in on business law, but don't think I'd want to practice full time. I'd more or less use the degree and license to bolster the resume and ensure that I'd never be without a job again. Hopefully it would guarantee and good finance/accounting job the rest of my life.

Any thoughts or advice?

They assume it's nerdy excel spreadsheets that relate strictly to numbers and tax issues that have no relation to the business world. The owner of my small company has no idea that I have been studying a vast array of topics relating to every aspect of managing and running a business. For instance, I remembered the "Grandfather, Father, Son" rule of backing up data and randomly mentioned it in a meeting involving IT people and their mouths hit the floor. They were shocked that the Controller knew anything about IT functions. I was pretty annoyed.

I just feel like the CPA prepares you to run not only be a great accountant, but also gives you the necessary knowledge to run a business successfully. Unfortunately for me, the owner doesn't realize this and pigeon holes me into only an accountant. Oh well...life goes on.

I passed my last part in December. Rather than wait for the pass letter (which as of today I still have not yet received), I found the application for the NJ state license online and sent it in. I then had my employer send in the statement of experience. I called my state board who verified that they had received the materials. But they said they had not received my exam scores yet. Is there anyone I can harass to get the ball rolling on this one? Why does it take so long for them to get my exam scores? any help would be much appreciated!

I am a small business manager, I do everything from bids, to pay bills, accounting, project management, to sweep the floor. I have an accounting degree and do lots of bookkeeping and working with insurance people, CPAs during tax time, etc. I have a chance to grow with another company my company is sharing an office with. I took over their accounting as a favor.

I don't want to change jobs or anything. The CPA is a personal thing for me. I just want for the people I am working for to know and to say they have a CPA working for them. I want the credibility when I call a bank or a client to say, "I am the CPA here at...."

My question is do I really have to pay all the annual fees associated with being a firm? I know I can go inactive, but then I cannot be called a CPA right? I don't mind doing CPE as I love learning, but wouldn't mind if I didn't have to do it if you know what I mean.

So what exactly are the rules for being an inactive CPA? Wouldn't I save a lot of money, especially if I am not going into public accounting? I do want to do people's taxes though, but not for a business.

Hi,

I have a question.
Submitted my application (attest experience, 150 hr - public accounting) over a month ago.
Just talked to the Board and my application is still under review.
I only had one signature on my attest experience certificate, since the manager who supervised me is not licensed yet, so the partner (who ultimately supervised me) signed.
I read that forms with only one signature are delayed.
Is that true? Anybody with similar experience?

Thanks

However, I just started a new position in credit finance and I don't know whether my work there will count. Does anyone know how strict Maryland is on the work experience requirement and if my experience in credit will count?

I see Becker has offerrings for studying prep. I also saw the exam was 4 hours and 200 MCQs. After the CPA, I'm pretty sure I can handle any sort of testing. Any advice would be appreciated.

I already passed the exam in another State where has simiar education requirement (150 total credits, 24 accounting and 24 others)
I knew someone got rejected because some required courses were missing, and the education requirement has to be met before the exam, so you can't make up later.

I took REG this morning and when I finished with my last simulation, I clicked "done" at the top right of the screen. It took me to window that asked if I wanted to review my exam, and the options were "quit exam", "yes", and "continue". I clicked "quit exam", thinking that I was finished, and that was the option to finish the exam. After clicking, it took me straight to the Prometric home screen. When I left the test room, they did not have confirmation that I had finished my test and could not give me a print out to take home, but said that it was probably not an issue and I should be OK. I am worried that my exam will not be graded. Do you have any insight? Thanks.

To the community and Jeff,

I was curious what kind of study guides and resources you use for those of you that have taken or will take the IRS RTRP test (Registered Tax Return Preparer).

Jeff - perhaps if there's enough interest you could create a Ninja study guide for the RTRP test ;-) Obviously there's too much out there to describe every single detail and possibility, but I think a Ninjaesque study guide would be swell.

Here's a link to the content outline:

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but I don't know where else to post it. I need to take 4 more college classes in order to become licensed. Does anyone know of any places to take cheaper online classes? I need junior level and above. I don't care about getting another degree so I don't really want to spend a bunch of money if I don't have to. Any help is appreciated.

Hey All,

Where can I read about what to do now that I passed the exam and the ethics part as well? I Know there's a website out there, but I just want a list of steps to do. Any websites with a checklist or summary list that anyone found easier to follow than the confusing website the ILBOA site leads you to?

THanKs!

I am interviewing for a p/t teaching position at the local community college (always had it in the back of my mind that I would teach a class one night a week when I finished this).

So can anyone tell me how many hours you REALLY put in to teach a class one night for 3 hours when you figure in grading, planning, etc. And I've seen that teachers are paid per contract hour. Are the contract hours the hours in the classroom or do they figure for hours spent outside the classroom.

So excited that I might be going back to the school where I started 8 years ago, only wanting my associates in liberal arts LOL. That took a left turn, I guess!

I don't know what's worse waiting for a score release or waiting for my license to be issued. I find that I check the licensing website about 3 - 5 times a day to see if they made it to the next step of my application. This has been going on since the first week of December. At least when scores are released you have an idea of when to expect your result.

My guess is the holidays caused my application to get pushed aside for a couple of weeks.

I currently work as a senior auditor at a small CPA firm and have recently applied to sit for the CPA exam in the state of CA. However, I don't like the office where I work and have lined up a couple of interviews at other firms. I believe my prospects of quickly getting an offer and moving on are very good.

The problem is that my boss takes it VERY personally whenever people quit and is known to be vindictive. Add to that the fact that we are in the middle of busy season and I am the lead on 4 of our 12/31 financial audits. I am concerned that if I leave now, my boss will refuse to sign for my audit hours outright or through omission (i.e. by ignoring my request) once I pass the exams.

My question, therefore, is whether or not I would have any recourse if my boss refuses to sign for my hours for petty reasons.

I have never done anything unethical while working at my firm and I don't see how my boss could reasonably claim that he doesn't think I'm competent. I have lead 23 financial audits for my firm and would be leaving in the midst of leading another 4, one of which is relatively large and prestigious.
