I find working MCQ useful in a way that if I get a question wrong, I go back and try to remember my thought process as what I was thinking in my head to choose a particular answer. For example, one of my weaknesses is that I am over analyzing stuff and if there is a very simple questions with a simple answer, I usually think that it can't be so easy and there must a hidden trick into it. Now I don't over analyze questions and the answers are usually right. MCQ also reinforces your conceptual understanding provided that your revisit the questions and review reasoning for why is this the answer.

Yes. I have to say that I am a little frustrated. (I am also the first to admit I am generally impatient). Even though I think the people at the Oregon Board are nice and helpful, this policy is just stupid. It has to be easier for all parties to simply have NASBA post scores online. Considering they don't have the scores yet, it appears that Oregon actually has the scores mailed to them just so they can open them up and send them back through the mail . . . I just don't get it. Though, I am sure they have their reasons.

@Firemaple I see that you're also expecting a score back. Have you happened to check to see if scores were in? I am just looking for some independent verification, as part of me is worried that I was only told that the score weren't in to avoid the awkwardness of having to tell me I failed over the phone.

Uchils, I feel your pain. The period between when AICPA releases scores and Oregon sends them out is the most excruciating part of the wait for me. I'm not sure what the process is for Oregon to get the scores from the AICPA. It seems like if *candidates* in most states have their scores already, the state board should have them!

@JPYoung - Good question? I never questioned the validity of what they were saying, but that was a big rumor when they started cleaning house in 2008. At least 2 professors spoke about taking in 2009, when they got hired, and how they were planning on taking it again soon. I guess they could be lying, I just don't know what good that would do?

I don't know what kind of motivational boost I can give, but I did take it this week. Frankly, it was awful. Overall, it seemed easier to me than AUD was. I found the research answer within 15 seconds, true story. It was so easy I spent another 3 minutes making sure. I spent 10 minutes looking for my AUD research question so I couldn't believe it would be so easy.

On a scale of 1-10 of difficulty, with 1 being easy and 10 being very difficult, I would rank my sims:
Sim 1: 1
Sim 2: 2
Sim 3: 7
Sim 4: 8
Sim 5: 12
Sim 6: 37 <--hoping it was a pretest

I wasn't as ready as I would like to have been, but I don't think any further studying would have helped me with the answers I didn't know.

Two pieces of advice for those taking the exam in the next few months:

1. Your review material is not going to prepare you well enough for the IFRS stuff. In my opinion, our review materials are behind this curve. I don't think it matters because ALL the review materials are insufficient, so we're probably all missing the same questions, so don't stress over it.

2. Budget your time and stick to it. I'm smart, I was more prepared than most, I'm a natural test-taker, and I had to use ALL of my time. You never know what kind of sims you will get and how much time you'll need. It's not necessarily about knowing, but about being able to control the adrenaline freakout going on in your brain so you can access what you know.

Of course, I haven't gotten my score yet, so there's no way for me to know anything about how well I did. I could've failed. I'll let you know when I get my score. Also, don't read this post and others talking about what a bad experience people had and get discouraged. Use these type of posts to set your expectations. A huge part of this game is not psyching yourself out or freaking out at the curveballs that you WILL be thrown, and scoring worse than is reflective of your actual knowledge.

FYI, for about an hour or so after you post, there's an "edit" button at the bottom of your post. If you post, then read the post and decide to change it, you can edit it. This feature disappears after a bit. I'm not sure how long.

@lion_cpa

You haven't said anything you shouldn't have said. I apologize if anyone has made you feel unwelcome.

If you really do want to become a CPA, then go for it.

If you don't care what you do, you just want to make more money (there are some people like that), then go for it.

If you secretly dream of being a fashion designer, drop this right now and go to fashion school.

If you have no idea what you want to do and you have money and time to burn, pursue the CPA. It will ultimately make you more marketable. Just be prepared that after five years of busy season or corporate accounting you may find yourself deciding architecture or law or nursing or opening a bed-and-breakfast or "anything but accounting" is where your heart really is.

If you don't know what you really want to do, and money is an issue or your quality of life for the next 6-12 months is important to you, spend some time really thinking about what you want to do. It's a question only you can answer.

Pursuing the CPA is a huge commitment of time, money, and effort, and you will almost definitely sacrifice for it, whether it be relationships, hobbies, health, or sanity. If you DO decide to do it, do yourself a favor and commit to it. Minimorty said in another thread that it's like ripping off a bandaid. That's an excellent analogy. Go as hard as you can, and get it done as fast as you can.

I'm having trouble re-applying to take the exam with the online system. I can log on and my past exams and scores are listed, but it's asking me to re-enter all my info, including all my educational credit hours and dates. Am I doing this wrong? I wouldn't think I'd have to do this each time I register. Thanks.

#33

Trust your gut. Don't psych yourself out. If you are well prepared you will pass if you do not psych yourself out mentally. Positive thinking and just relaxing in the room will help you pass. Stress all you want up until test day but the minute you sit down at the computer, let it all go.

Nope. There isn't major change between 2011-2012, so you should be fine!

I'm using Becker 2011 and they said majority of the information is the same, minus few changes here and there. Becker provides updates, and that should be sufficient.

I wonder if Yaeger provides something of that sort. Good luck:!)

@jkey57

I meant tricky as in "difficult to deal with" rather than "deceptive and devious". There's no way they could LITERALLY "trick" you with a question. However, they are adept at throwing you answers that look right but aren't, and using language that means the same thing but sounds very different than the review materials used. Under normal circumstances, the answer might seem obvious, but in the hyper-adrenaline-charged environment of the exam, being familiar with how they word things and having practiced lots of their "which of these is NOT" questions is a definite advantage. Having said that, if you're a high-level student, that level of practice with how they like to word questions is not likely to make the difference between a pass or fail.

I am an international student studying in the states
I have been studying since Dec, 2011.
I spend 6 to 8 hrs a day for the FAR and REG section. I think I am dedicated to this thing...
Since I am studying with 2011 yaeger review, I worry if I am studying the wrong material.
Can anyone help me with this ?
I just want to ge some advices on changes in 2012 cpa exam.

I checked AICPA website and did not find any announcement on the changes to the exam except the one that is
effective in 2013.
Other than that, is there major differences in 2012 exam?

I've updated it more lately because like I've stated, I have plenty of free time and I get bored. And I don't have big commitments! I guess I will learn soon enough how bad this exam will be. I haven't felt it's wrath yet. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing. Do you give yourself a day or night off during the week?

Thanks everyone! Very good advice, will skip taking break all together. My exam is at 1300 so I can plan having food and coffee well ahead of time to avoid any loss of time for the break.

Here it is :

Not the least bit surprised---I write this as a proud peer of Yankee and Peanut. Keep it up! The finish line is within sight---are you going to jog the last stretch? Nope...you're going to sprint until the end---dig down deep, its going to take determination and the same work ethic the other 3 passing scores required. I am happy for you both, but we aint poppin champagne just yet....finish strong! I'll be here pulling for you, with a bottle of champagne waiting. (BakedCPA)

I have recently passed all four parts of the CPA exam and I am interested in applying at a Big 4 firm in Sacramento. I am appyling from out of state as we are trying to move closer to where my wife and my family are.

I am nervous about just applying online, as I know I have a much better chance of getting an interview if I can contact someone directly at one of the four firms and introduce myself.

I figure there has to be a lot of people at big four firms from Sacramento that are currently taking the CPA exam and are active on this blog. This may be a shot in the dark.

Can anyone hook me up with a contact person at one of these firms that I can email a resume to and introduce myself too? Thanks!

Took 1 practice exam and got like a 76 or something. Actual exam was an 88.

I felt Becker prepared me well for almost all the MCQs I saw on the exam. The cost accounting section is waay harder in thereview versus what I saw on exam day.

I think it was the one Hopeful_cpa started when we both passed. But you could find Baked's name on the main forum page on the bottom of the screen, it should tell you his last post and you can select the thread there.

He is such a kind soul. Of course since I am such an old lady, it was waterworks for me. OIY!!

The CPA exam is like ripping off a band-aid. You know its going to hurt, so you want to get it over with as quickly as you can.

If you really want this, I would put all of your available time and energy into it. You are working part time and it sounds like you have no other big commitments (spouse, children, etc.). This is really going to be the perfect opportunity to do it. If you get a great internship in the summer, go ahead and take it. It shouldn't preclude you from studying in the evenings and on the weekends.

On another note, your blog is "cute" and actually well done. Much better than most I've seen. That being said, I really suggest you not put much time into your blog. That time is better spent studying. You have to live, breathe, and die CPA exam if you want to knock these exams out of the way. There is no easy path to getting it done.
