Long story why, but I'm taking all the exams this test window. I don't have a job right now, so I study all day every day. I was really nervous before I took my first exam, FAR. I had done tons of MCQ and sims but wasn't sure what to expect on the actual exam. I felt like it went well, but I also thought it was the hardest exam I'd ever taken. I was so drained afterwards that the receptionist at Prometric asked me if I was OK to drive, because I had trouble getting my locker open and gathering my stuff. That night I told my husband it was the hardest test I've ever taken but I thought I'd passed, and he said "Don't take this the wrong way, but it never occurred to me that you might fail. I assume that the people who don't pass don't study very much."

AUD went well and then came REG. I was nervous going in, and the test was bad. FAR was tough, but it was in a way I expected. The difficult questions were hard, but I understood what was being asked and I usually knew what I needed to do. There were just a handful of questions that I didn't know. REG was tough because there were several poorly worded questions. I understood the material, but it wasn't clear from the question exactly what they were asking. There were only 2 or 3 questions where better preparation would have helped. Depending on which ones were the test questions I might have done OK, but there's also a good chance I failed. When I told my husband this he said "but it should have been easy for you--you do our taxes!!!!"

While at a social event for CPAs in my area, the topic came up about how I have just recently passed the CPA exam. One of the CPAs turned and looked at me and sarcasticly said "My exam was 19 hours over 2 days. What was yours?" I should have responded with something about how my (almost) license was just the same as hers except mine doesn't have 30 years of experience (yet) to go with it. So annoying how "older" CPAs think we have it SO good because we get to spread the exam out over months instead of taking it in 2 days.

I've spent the last few years spending crazy money, time and energy getting a Masters in Accounting and passing the CPA exam. And after all of that, it's been a struggle finding a proper accounting job in this economy. I'm currently underemployed, working in a billing department, but greatful for the income and benefits while I keep applying. The nature of our work has us interacting with client's CPA's regularly. My co-workers hate CPAs, and are proud of the fact that they have gotten to their positions without an accounting degree. I don't tell anyone about my education or license. But I am so sick of the constant comments about how stupid and entitled CPAs are. Never in my wildest dreams would I think the CPA cert would be something I would have to hide!

My husband and I were talking about retirement, or the lack thereof, many years from now.

So I jokingly say, "Can't wait to retire with you, 'Gran Torino'".

Then he says, "Well, you'll still be studying for the CPA when you're 65".

DOGHOUSE!!!!!!!!

So today a co-worker ask me:

Co-worker: "So...did you pass the FAR section?"

Me: "No, I'm planning to start studying again and take it sometime during the summer."

Co-worker: "Why didn't you pass? Is that the financial section? That sounds super easy is just finance stuff."

Me: ".........."

I didn't say a word, I just gave him a look while wondering why I'm hearing this from a guy who is just in the compliance department without any experience in accounting and worst of all he doen't even have any kind of licensing whatsoever. Why do people who talk the most, are the least qualified to talk?

@herbert7890: I think the same thing. All of my lawyer friends have never said anything dumb about the CPA designation or exam. Most of them say that they'd rather take the bar than the CPA exam. I think it's because lawyers work a lot with CPAs in their practice, so they see firsthand their value. The medical professionals that I know just don't understand all of what a CPA does nor do they understand the importance of it all.

From my experience the health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, etc) have no clue what a CPA does. They all assume is a license to do taxes.......................gets me so mad. But in contrast, most lawyers and engineers highly respect CPAs and actually know their importance in the society. I believe medical students need to implement some business courses on their curriculum (my wife is a medical doctor), they are really lacking on business knowledge and after all, running a medical office is a business.

dont remember the exact wording of my conversations but it's been something like this:

She says: So What do you do [for a living]?
Me: I do not work. I am studying for my CPA full-time.
She says: What's that? I'm a CNA [certified nursing assistant]. I almost have my associates. So are you in school?
Me: No. I am done with school for now. I just got my Masters and spent a year working as an auditor.
She: Holy sh*t you have a Masters?

Old fart: The CPA is open book, right?
Me: No. Actually it's closed book and it's entirely on the computer.
Old fart: Oh. After you pass, you're gonna be doing people's taxes.

So yesterday, the minute I found out I passed my last section, I yelled and ran to my boss to tell him. I was like, "Guess what! I passed my last section." He held out his hand for a high five and I said,"This calls for happy hour, yaaa!" He goes, It's tax season, shrugs and doesn't say anything else. Let me tell you, if you were watching me at this point, you could see my shoulders and my whole body just slouch down. As Bon Jovi would say, a shot through the heart! haha Anyway, both of the CPA's who I work for weren't really supportive throughout the whole process so I guess I should have expected that.

My dad in response to be getting an 80 on FAR... here's our conversation (please know he's a broker):

Me: Guess what dad, I got my FAR score back... I PASSSEEDDD!!!!!!!
Dad: That's wonderful! I'm so proud of you... so what did you score?

(now we all know it's not nice to ask someone what they scored b/c 75 is all that counts... and admittingly, I didn't finish but half of 1 SIM and still got an 80, so I was pretty proud of myself).

Me: Really? You want to know my score?
Dad: Sure... was it bad?
Me: No... actually, it was an 80!!!!
Dad: Really? That's good, so what did you get wrong?
Me: Huh? 75 is passing, it's not like I got 80% right and 20% wrong... and an 80 is a phenomenal score dad.
Dad: Are you going to retake it for a better score?
Me: (while gagging) NO! You don't, actually can't retake a pass. Why would you?
Dad: Well, you don't want your bosses to know you were 5 points from failing do you?
Me: No one in the profession really discusses scores b/c your head partner doesn't want his rookie to know she scored better than the partner. Most get in the 70s, get their license and forget their scores. And I think my management would be quite proud of my 80. In fact, my immediate manager score two 75s and two 76s on her exam.
Dad: Huh... well, if you are happy with the score, then I am too! Good job!!!!
Me: *&^% you Dad! (okay, so I didn't say that, but wanted to)

I still laugh at this conversation. He can't grasp that no one cares as long as you pass.

Me: "I can not wait until I am done studying for these exams!"

My friend: "uugh, I know exactly what you mean! I have been studying for the GMAT for two straight weeks and I think I am at my breaking point"

Me:....

I can't tell you how helpful it is to hear everyone's stories of how uneducated some people are regarding what we go through!

Background: I'm originally from South America and my english is not perfect but I've been here in US for 9 years and got a MBA, work for the last 8, married an American, etc etc... so my English is decent.
I was complaining to one of my best friends how difficult these exams are , and how much work I have to do, etc etc.. All he had to say is that I should bring a dictionary to the exam or take the spanish version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that should help me.... really! And.. to make matters worst , he has said this 3 times already (I'm counting them) for the last two months. I have decided to stop talking about my CPA pains with others.

A very good friend of mine recently started online community college to become a paralegal. She recently informed me we'll only be 'one letter different.' Meaning, I'll be a CPA and she'll be a CPL.

AUD-47, 4/2/11; BEC-70, 7/11; FAR-62, 2/18/11 (STILL waiting!); REG-65, 5/28/11

I had a friend (who is also a client) tell me last weekend, "There's no WAY you didn't pass!" I didn't have the heart to point out that one of the scores I was waiting on was one I failed last summer (although I didn't get through all my study material last time). Fortunately I did pass, so if she asks I won't have that uncomfortable, "Um, I realize I did your taxes, but I did fail REG." That would have SUCKED.

I've been having trouble getting a job since graduating, and have been focusing on the exam full-time. You know the encouragement I get from my father in terms of the exam:

"It's great that you're getting the exams out of the way, but I'm not sure how much it will help in terms of getting a job, all of the firms EXPECT you to pass the exam at some point."

Gee, way to increase my confidence. Oh well, I've passed 3 sections, and I'm waiting for BEC to be released in a few days.

When I was in college, I didn't feel like anyone knew what a CPA was. But as I got older, people asked what I did for a living, I would say "I'm an accountant" to which they would always respond "Are you a CPA?" So I then realized that most people know what a CPA is. A few months after passing the exam I ran into a friend from high school and he said "What do you do?" And I (FINALLY) got my first opportunity to say "I'm a CPA!". Then he responded "What's that??". Then I had to say, "I'm an accountant". UGH! I can't win!

When I'm asked "Why are you taking this exam anyway? I mean you are already an accountant." I have two standard answers:

(1) I'm a pain loving freak who gets off on rejection and public humiliation.
or
(2) I'm doing this so that you can ask me stupid questions like "Why are you taking this exam anyway?".

For some reason they don't bother to ask any further questions.

When trying to explain to my sister the problems that the score release delay could cause for me and how stressed out I am about it, she says "oh, like no one else has taken a difficult exam before." --She is a licensed PT, but she received her score in less than two days. She also wasn't working when she was going to school and studying, and she only studied about 10-15 hours per week. I study at least 20 hours per week and work 40+ hours per week. And I have been studying for this since August 2009, and I am waiting on my last score. This was also after two years of grad school (and working part-time). She went to school for 3 years to get her DPT, then passed the licensing exam about 6 weeks later. I'm not saying that her test wasn't difficult, but muscles and nerves don't change, while tax laws and accounting principles change all the time.

I love this site--I refer to it as my "CPA exam support group" because that's what it is to me! Even though my family is educated, school is a completely different ball of wax than the CPA exam. I've always done well in school, so I'm not a dummy. The CPA exam just really is that hard! Thanks for this website, Jeff! I don't think I would have made it this far without it!!

Wow I thought I was the only one wondering if I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I guess I can be thankful I didn't throw up. I only had about 5 crying jags the day of my last test. I cried for no apparent reason on the way home.
