I am 33 living in Miami with a BA in Public Administration.

Almost all of my work experience is Accounting/Budget/Administrative related and currently making $23/hour working in public. I enjoy working with numbers, budgets, forecasting, variances, reconciliations and the individualistic/detail oriented side part of my working experience. I would love to continue learning and moving up within an Accounting/Budgeting related role however, almost all positions at the next level up are asking for BA in Accounting. I have applied only within public and large private but, the only responses I’ve received are to ask if I have any credits in Accounting.

Some people have suggested going for an MBA however, the cost is considerably high in comparison to a BA in Accounting and MAcc programs in Florida require a Business related degree. In addition, I’m not very interested in management.

I’m trying to decide what method to take.

Would a 2nd BA in Accounting be a good idea and would the pay after graduation be near what I am currently making?

Please provide any feedback, opinions and/or real life experiences.

Also look into post-baccalaureate certificate programs, which are pretty much the equivalent. That is what I winded up doing to get my accounting coursework in and to get my foot into the door.

    CPA (2017)

    REG:  75

    BEC:  76

    FAR:  77

    AUD: 78

    CMA (2019)

    P1: 380

    P2: 360

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)

@michelle I live here in Miami as well and some of the people I know (including one CPA) just went for a MACC program. Some MACC programs offer pre-requisites in accounting for those that did not do a bachelor in accounting or simply not have all the credits necessary.

    BEC - PASSED
    AUD - PASSED
    REG - PASSED
    FAR - PASSED

    BEC - PASSED
    AUD - 8/29/16
    FAR - TBS
    REG - TBS

Michelle my undergrad was also in Public Admin. When I started looking at going back I also could not decide between a second bachelors or doing Maccy…I knew for certain I did not want an MBA it just seemed pointless to me if all I really wanted to do was be a CPA. l started down the second bachelors path (2 classes) when I was 38 and to be honest I ended up a lot more frustrated than anything because both classes were filled with young undergraduates that had no work experience and not a lot of focus aside from just passing the class. My managerial professor actually was the one to convince me to stop the undergrad route and apply for the masters program, and I am SO GLAD that I did. Yes it did end up costing me more money but in the end I feel like it was money well spent, and now after the fact it feels like a huge accomplishment to say and put on my resume that I have a masters. I would recommend looking into Maccy programs.
