Accountants and… tattoos - Page 4

So I’m one lecture in to my FAR re-study and bored out of my mind.

Just curious about the whole “conservative” image accountants seem to have. When I had a mid-life crisis and changed my career to accounting, I also got a tattoo. My tramp stamp is a shamrock on my shoulder. Maybe I should have gotten a dollar sign or a T-account.

Do you have a tattoo? What? Where?

(Jeff may delete this. It is not CPA related. Like I said, I am bored.)

I have a true ‘tramp stamp:' a Chinese character that supposedly means ‘victory.' I got it on my 18th birthday and it was to commemorate winning our high school state championship in softball. Because I just knew I'd want to tell that story forever!

Well, I've been through 8 (yes, 8!) laser tattoo removal sessions to get that dumb thing off my back. I've never had kids, but the pain has to be somewhere up there on par with childbirth. When they zap you with the laser, it sounds like they're throwing water in a frying pan. You're basically being branded like a cow every time they zap you, because it's essentially burning it off you (even though that's technically not what happens, I guess). It's cost me $1800 to get it removed, and still going.

I am not against tattoos, but personally, I will never get one again. I'll get a sticker or something and put it on the back of my car. Someone gave me good advice once, that I wish I'd taken: any tattoo idea, think on it for at least a year. A whole year. Nine times out of ten, you'll look back and thank god you didn't get whatever it was you wanted.

    Just my two cents!

@keelydare1 – Why get it removed? Just curious why you would go through all the pain and expense for something most people will never know is there.

What if you tatted yourself up like Guy Pearce in Memento with all of your CPA notes? Could they stop you from using them at the testing center?

I have 3, a nautical star on my lower left part of the abdomen, close to the hip bone, a Japanese dragon across my hips, and a tramp stamp I didn't think about lol. The dragon is my favorite, biggest, most meaningful and definitely the most painful one. I have always liked tattoos and will most likely get some more in the future. But at the same time I understand some people are not too fond of them and it is completely ok with me. We are all different, we all have different tastes and ways of thinking. As a result , all of my tattoos can be covered and no one will ever be able to tell if I have any in the workplace, unless I tell them. I love tattoos but I wouldn't want to risk my future as a professional over them so I just hide them whenever appropriate.

@Renee, it's just really tacky. When I wear a bathing suit, I get questioned on it every time as to what it stands for. I've always said if it were anywhere else other than my lower back, I'd probably let it slide, but because it's a true tramp stamp, I want it off.

If I don't pass REG, I am going to Tatoo tax code, AGI, AMT formulas on my arms. Don't think Prometric is going to do anything with that…”Sir, you need to take your skin off.”…

@Keelydare1…. I never would trust the tattoo artist to put the right Chinese letters on. I'd be afraid they would put something on that means ‘kick me' or ‘drunk college girl' or ‘call me for a good time' 😀

I'm thinking that when I pass I might have CPA in that old english scribe put on my neck. Yeah above the collar and fist sized. C on the right side, P in the middle with the adams apple right in the middle of the P, and A on the left side of the neck. That should help me with my career exploits right? 😀

@CPApending…your concern on Chinese charactor tatoo is right on. I am Chinese, and I have seen many people have their Chinese tatoos done wrong…it's laughable. Even they get the words right, the calligraphy is very poor, looks like a Chinese kid's writing.

Jeff please tell me you are kidding? I guess because I have them I am over them. I don't think they look good anymore and would really encourage anyone to reconsider. Be beautiful in your skin and protect it. Looking back I wish someone had encouraged me to think I was beautiful the way I was and did not need “art” to define myself.

What I need though is a good set of barbed wire around my bicep.

I've always wondered if my tattoo really says what I think it says. I doubt it. Just another reason I'm going through the torture to have it removed! I have friends that are, literally, covered in tattoos. I know someone with a tattoo on his scalp. And another guy with one on his…you know. I know some very odd people…

I grew up working in a nursing home (family business) and I always think what would these old people's tattoos look like if they had them. That is the overarching reason which will prevent me from ever getting another one again.
