So I’m one lecture in to my FAR re-study and bored out of my mind.
Just curious about the whole “conservative” image accountants seem to have. When I had a mid-life crisis and changed my career to accounting, I also got a tattoo. My tramp stamp is a shamrock on my shoulder. Maybe I should have gotten a dollar sign or a T-account.
Do you have a tattoo? What? Where?
(Jeff may delete this. It is not CPA related. Like I said, I am bored.)

I have 6 tattoos, some in arabic, some designs, and one in chinese (which I am going to get removed, or covered up, I got it when I was 14)…
I also use to have my tongue, ears, and labret pierced, but I have taken them all out permanently since I need to be “professional.” BUT! I still have two piercings.. one in my nipple.. and one somewhere else… (Im a guy not a girl!)

July 26, 2013 at 3:22 am #560344AnonymousInactiveThread looks old now.. but stumbled across this as I'm getting a tattoo in two days on my back, and I'm undecided where! I was thinking mid-back, to avoid the low-back tramp stamp, but I do like to wear some open-back style tops to work… and not sure if I want to have to alter some of my wardrobe for work. I work in a very small, conservative CPA firm. Pretty sure it would be unacceptable to let it show even just once. :/ No, no Cash T-Account for me, either. 😉

I have a smiley face wearing a tiarra with a modification of my unmarried last name “kingette” underneath it. I got the tattoo with my brother before he was shipped to afghanistan. He got his on his left arm with a skull and modified his last name to say “kinger!” I don't regret mine at all, especially since it can't be seen unless I am naked! Also, it is a bond between my brother and I that makes me feel close to him even when he is in a combat zone. He returned to Afghan in April of 2013 and I miss him terribly! I don't recall the year we got our tattoos, but he has gone to afghan, iraq, korea, and is now in afghan again so it has been a quite a while.

REG: ?????July 26, 2013 at 1:34 pm #560346I've got several throughout my body. Working in public accounting, I never show them at work but have no problem showing them afterwards when we're at the hotel or going out for dinner.
I think it's amusing that prometric doesn't do anything about tattoos. When I took the CIA exams, they had to document my tattoos each time I tested.

I don't really regret them, just sorta “eh” about them now. I am definitely not getting any more. And I will definitely advocate against my future offspring getting any!

The knot is the trinity symbol (the version with a circle in it) – the circle is done in my birthstone color and each point of the trinity symbol is the birthstone of each of my 3 brothers. Just so happens that my mom, dad, and husband are each the same birthstone as one of my brothers so they included too, although it was meant to represent my brothers and I. I got that one in January 2009 and still love it. I tried it out first by coloring in the design and taping the paper to my ankle to make sure I really wanted it before I actually got it done.
The “Blue singapore” (dendrobium) orchid was the main flower from my wedding. I wanted to do a tribute to my husband and I, but I didn't want to do names or dates. I started thinking about it right before our September 2011 wedding, and ended up getting it done on our 8 month anniversary. Been a little over a year now and I still love this one.
I can't wear skirts to work because of the ankle one, but I don't like to wear skirts anyway so it doesn't matter. The one on my shoulder is only visible in spaghetti-strap tank tops or a bathing suit. I love that I can show them when I want, but hide them when I need.
July 26, 2013 at 2:45 pm #560349KenadaMemberI used to think about getting a tattoo when I was in high school. I guess I grew out of wanting one. If i did get one it would be a little flower around my left shoulder blade. A lilac flower as it is my favorite flower.
I do have one of my reports that does has a half sleeve tattoo and is of her daughter she lost at a very young age. She does wear sleeve less tops but no one is bothered by it. It's her daughters name and date of birth.
I don't think there is anything bad with having a tattoo and it showing. As long as its not offensive, I think its acceptable.

July 26, 2013 at 2:56 pm #560351Never_Give_Up1MemberI am turning 30 in 2 months and I am thinking of getting this,
I work in a place where tattoos are not looked down on. I plan on having some things inscribed in the ribbon, but I wont go into the details. I am on the fence with it… as I really want it for personal reasons but at the same time I have a hard time breaking the tradition since I am very conservative and wonder if it will hurt my future job prospects. I believe the world is changing so things like this matter less to people, but the apprehension is still there. This would be my first and only tattoo.

July 26, 2013 at 11:06 pm #560353icanhazcpaMemberI have three tattoos, one on each wrist and one on my ankle. I was really worried about them at my job at a public accounting firm, but surprisingly nobody really cares. I'm about halfway into getting them removed, but that was really only because I thought it'd be a big deal at work. The only one I cover when going to clients is my ankle, because it's more obvious. But when I'm just in the office nobody cares if I wear dresses or skirts. I was really surprised.

But after recent life events, I'm CONSIDERING the Thyroid Cancer Awareness ribbon with “Survivor” above it and my license number under it. IF I do this, I'm thinking on my back somewhere, just not a true tramp stamp.
August 6, 2013 at 5:15 pm #560355jkpoker1MemberI have a tribal sleeve on my upper arm. Honestly, I will def try to hide it when I get an accounting job. Its really evident that a lot of people in the business world (mostly older conservatives) really look down on tattoos and will judge you based on it for no real apparent reason. You can be the nicest person and have a great work ethic and I honestly think people would still judge you negatively due to a tattoo. Looking back, I would rather have the $1k I spent on it but immaturity set in with my decision making. Only good thing I can say about it is chicks dig it at concerts (however some girls are turned off by tattoos).

FAR-TBAAugust 6, 2013 at 5:20 pm #560356Jsmi77yMemberI just took a half day from work and told my peeps that I'm off to get a tattoo on my ribcage. Have 2 now, upper back and ribcage.
Doubt I'll ever get one where u can see it with a T-shirt and shorts. All upper body for me.
But I know this one I just got definitely isn't my last. Honestly, it shouldn't be anyones business imo. Plus it's 2013. If a client doesn't like that you have tattoos then they are judgmental fools and despite losing a client, you probably didn't want to be of service to them anyways.
Perhaps a pessimistic view, but conforming to stereotypes should only go so far.

August 6, 2013 at 5:45 pm #560357MiaParticipantI have a tattoo on my nape. A family crest – I got it a few years back. When I got it I said to myself I wanted to be stamped because from that day on I wanted to always be reminded to make my family proud! 🙂
