So, I was thinking that this could be fun…if you are looking for a distraction.

I need your help coming up with a job title for a new position my organization is developing. I am coming to you because myself and my Controller are at a loss. As a reference point to what our accounting department manages, our assets currently sit at $6.9 billion with an equity balance of $3.2 billion. Some of the duties will include:

    – Assist in organization wide monthly financial reporting to the board of directors

    – Manages two ledgers (minimal amount) of two separate entities who have contracted with us to do their accounting

    – Accounts for $500 million concessionaire agreement related to a $2.2 billion capital project

    – Prepares Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports

    – Acts as Treasurer for organization related 501(c)3

    – Assists in annual budget preparation

    – Part of team involved in variance analyses

    – Performs financial reviews of outside companies for potential contracts

    – Part of team in charge of identifying financing for capital projects and asset acquisitions

So, it has accounting and debt and finance and 10 other miscellaneous things.

Help!! You know, if you’d like to avoid working/studying right now.

I think the having the Industry listed would help.

Other than that I can only think of two names

    Senior Accountant

    Financial Analyst

It's in Denver and the industry is transportation.

@ScarletKnightCPA, It is a senior position but I kind of like the direction you're going.

@rnguyen7, you are on the path of what we were thinking, “Sr. Accountant and Financial Analyst” but it sounded blah. Was trying to get creative.” Have no idea how to do that though!

@wombatholic I think I like yours the best “Queen of Money”. I am passing that one along. What's the worst they can say…

Sounds like the same job I have

If I recall correctly the job posting titled my role as “Financial Accounting Specialist”.. but internally and any client correspondences we simply list our role as “accountant”. Your real goal in finding a proper name on your posting is to give the title a bit of a ring (to make it sound interesting), while not mislabeling it to the point where people think its a more prestigious role than it actually is (i.e. don't choose the title ” Senior Finance Executive” if your looking for someone to crunch numbers all day, because you will be wasting your time and theirs.

    Good luck.

    AUD - 2/19/15 -86
    BEC - 4/09/15 -86

    I'M DONE! ITS OVER! WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

@OlintoJr, I totally agree. That's the biggest problem with titling this position. There is very, very little crunching numbers and maybe 2 hours of GL work a month. It's all high level. Sr. Accountant fits, but doesn't show the whole picture. It needs more…

    For a senior role:

    Senior Accounting/Financial Operations Associate

    or

    Accounting/Financial Operations Specialist

    or

    Accounting/Financial Operations Consultant

You can use accounting vs financial depending on what you feel is more fitting or personal preference.

If I was looking at the posting, I would assume “Associate” or “Specialist” meant “Clerk that we wanted to make sound better”. Maybe my perception is wrong, but just throwing it out there. Maybe something like “Senior Finance Accountant” would convey both?

That sounds exactly what I do, AND, by chance I work for transportation too!

Okay, my real title is “Financial Analyst”, people call me secretary.

I would just name it under Analyst, or maybe Contract / Performance Specialist / Analyst? Consultant?

It depends if you want to go more the accountant way, or more the finding right potential contract and analyst them way.

I would assume you are looking for someone that can analyst stuff and give thoughtful reports.

Denver is too far way and I am bound to conflict of interest. Otherwise, I will consider apply for this position!

    Wait, you can be a transportation company and have a 501(c)3? A non-profit 501(c)3?

You need to start with what is budgeted for the position then use a reliable source like Robert Half salary guide to narrow down the titles. No sense calling it a Senior Accountant If the average senior position pays 70k and your company is looking to start someone at $50k. From there once you have reasonable titles for the salary budgeted you can tweak and improvise a bit. Use the keywords in a job search on indeed and find similar job postings in your area. It also doesn't make sense to title the job “number ninja” if great applicants are searching “Financial Analyst” jobs. The bottom line isn't how nice the title is but how the best candidates will come across the posting.

@Scarlet, thank you so much for all of those ideas. I feel like I should write the individual terms down on flashcards and mix and match.

@Lilia, I am with you. I actually really like Senior Finance Accountant.

@Yellowsugar, I was against analyst too but then was reminded that if it's attached to Senior Accountant it does convey a higher degree of analysis required. Also, what's up transportation buddy! And the 501(c)3, most governments have one. The City of Denver has one, the State of Colorado has one. It's for our giving campaigns so people can have the deduction. We also have a program for people to give disadvantaged youth scholarship money for education.

@mla, it is in fact a senior position. Salary range will be 70k-90k depending on qualifications.

So, Sr. Accountant and Financial Operations Analyst? I love it but man, it's long.
