Accounting jobs over the internet

This is related to a recent post of mine about traveling as an accountant. I’d like to spend the next few years living in different places around the world and was wondering if anyone had any information about accounting jobs that can be done over the internet to fund this type of living/travel.

    Thanks

I think if such things existed, top accountants would be flocking to them. I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for, unfortunately. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Thanks a lot rugger, that looks like a good resource. I'm not looking to make a ton of money doing this. My travel destinations would be in developing countries and other more thrifty areas. Not looking to make an online living while traveling long-term in Paris and Rome or anything like that. For example, I did some traveling in Thailand and stayed on an island for a little while where I paid $5 for a beach hut and $5 a day to rent a motorcycle. Lived very comfortably on $20 dollars a day.

This is the best site I've found for this kind of stuff…https://www.flexjobs.com/jobs/telecommuting-CPA-jobs

Hey Samdiego, what materials did you use for REG?

Most type of work like this would be freelancing/own business type thing, and you'd probably be paid very little (you would be competing with people from low wage countries doing the same).

This is something I would love to do eventually, and I don't think the jobs are impossible to find either. They probably don't pay much either but you're ok with that. I think places like TurboTax and Proseries hire CPAs to help clients over the phone. I also remember seeing a website called mombookkeepers.com or something like that and it hired CPAs who were stay at home moms to work remotely. And maybe some firms would allow you to work remotely during tax season like contract work, also check Craigslist, I've seen ads that offer contract work that you can do from home.

Also, I've heard that some people only work during tax season and then take the rest of the year off… maybe that's something to look into as well.

Why not work in those geographical areas? Why work over the internet only?

Cayman hires CPAs, the Big Four are all over the world, plus other international accounting firs.

    Why not apply overseas?

    BA Mathematics, UC Berkeley
Certificates in CPA and EA preparation, College of San Mateo
    CMA I 420, II 470
    FAR 91, AUD Feb 2015 (Gleim self-study)

If you have experience as a tax accountant you might be able to pick up clients during tax season if you visit areas where there are a lot of retired US citizens. If you were savy enough to start your own website you could create a consulting company where you provide consulting services via web chat or over the phone. It might take years to develop the knowledge and expertise to do this successfully.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Study Monk is right…there is a relatively large, relatively untapped market in ex-pats, as I have recently read in an article. They get so frustrated with trying to file their US returns that some have resorted to giving up their US citizenship altogether (self-induced ID crises)

If you have your Masters and some experience, you can always teach Accounting at an online school

I've been pondering this type of thing as well since my boyfriend is looking into some career options that would involve a fair amount of travel for him (probably about 10 trips a year, 1-2 weeks each) but wouldn't require a lot of hours per day, so if I was free to travel, I could travel with him and work while he worked then see the sights together in the evenings. Looks like his career plans may not pan out, so I'm not as concerned with it for myself, but I still think it's an interesting idea. Most accounting work really doesn't need face-to-face involvement, so why not have it remote? If remote, why not be able to travel?

One caution to throw out there for trying to do this work in developing countries – if your definition of “developing country” and mine are similar, then it may be hard to find sufficient internet quality to reliably work remotely. This might make something like Study Monk's idea more attractive!

I like Gina's idea too. I've been looking quite a bit into the prospect of doing some college teaching in the future…it really intrigues me for some reason. Doesn't hurt that the average pay nationwide is over 100k, but the hours aren't really that bad compared to most accounting (my dad's worked as staff at colleges most of my life, so I've been involved enough with the faculty-staff world to see what faculty hours are usually like). But I don't think I want a doctorate, and a Master's isn't usually enough to get a full-time permanent teaching job, so not sure I'll go that route!
