Accounting volunteer disclosure on resume

After high school i volunteered to help a construction company with their accounting/business development. This was great experience for me as I had to learn everything on my own because there was not a controller, accountant, not even a clerk on staff to teach me because she had quit. So my interest in accounting started there when i helped the company. Unfortunately this was not a paid position and the company no longer exists (went out of business my sophomore year of college). The owner of the company went MIA and I can’t find him anywhere to vouch for my experience. Should i list this experience on my resume as an internship/volunteer position or should I just leave it off.

I'd call it an internship and if asked for pay info, indicate that it was unpaid.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Just like any position on your resume, you don't list your pay next to that position, so I don't think it's necessary to specify that it was a volunteer job.

Don't leave it off your resume. The experience counts even if the company no longer exists.

You can either call it an internship, or just list it as a regular job.

I don't think that's misleading because a resume is focused on your experience. – i.e. What did you do at this job? Ya know? A resume does not advertise how much you made at each position.

So, if you list the experience that you got there, That's all that's relevant.

    FAR - 86 - 2/27/14
    AUD - 75 - 5/29/14
    BEC - 80 - 8/31/14
    REG - 89 - 2/27/15
    Praise Jesus! I'm done!!

I would consider it an unpaid internship, and yes I would put it on my resume. Since it was accounting duties, it is definitely relevant experience. If someone asks about it, you just explain what you told us – you did accounting for a company that has since gone out of business.

Put it on your resume. List it as an internship- DO NOT list it as a job! They didn't pay you, so it wasn't a job- it was an unpaid internship. Don't list it as “volunteering” either. You volunteer your time to NFPs, not construction companies.

If a potential employer does a reference check and it comes out that you weren't EMPLOYED by the firm, then you will have any offer retracted, or worse- be shown the door a week or two into working.

It's an unlikely scenario under your circumstances, but it is a real risk and one that should not be taken lightly.
