Advice on BEC with Becker.

I sat for BEC about a year ago without success and finally decided to get serious. I have Becker and watched the videos for the first section. I took notes in the book that were shown in the videos. This is where my problem starts. I used a different review the first time and took very detailed notes in a separate notebook. Time is going to be the problem. I will not have time to take such detailed notes. I am looking for suggestions to help my time management. Does anyone else feel like they are rewriting the book? I was thinking about watching the videos, read section, take notes on the areas Becker suggests are memorized, and then move on to homework making notes directly from questions. I appreciate any advice to get my strategy prepared.

If time is not on your side, I would highly suggest the NINJA way. Consider purchasing the 10 point combo or at least the NINJA notes. They break everything down for you and focus on the most highly tested areas. They are just a supplement though, so you should still go through all the sections that Becker covers. No matter what, you're going to have to find a way to stretch your days if you're serious about passing. Waking up early or staying up late. If you put in the time, you'll come out victorious. If you don't, you won't.

B-79 (4th Attempt, finally killed you Nov 2013)
    A-81 (3rd Attempt, Feb 2014) AND I AM DONE!!!!!
    R-80 (1st Attempt, Feb 2013)
    F-77 (2nd attempt, Jan 2014)

@TxDan – I took BEC a few weeks ago, and this is what I did:

    – COSO/IT – take good notes b/c there are no calcs involved. Make sure you get the big picture

    – Economics – draw the charts, breath the charts, live the charts. Make sure you understand what exactly is occurring when moving along the S & D curves and with curve shifts. REASON out why things happen: e.g. drop in interest rate –> money is “cheaper” —> increase (shift) in AD. Take notes on the little nuances that you don't understand until you understand.

    – Cost accounting/CVP – I didn't take notes, but I did write down every equation *every* time I did an MCQ. it was about repetition of the equations so that it becomes second nature. For CVP and variances, I thought Becker did a poor job at explaining it. Go on youtube, watch some videos till you find someone who explains it the way that you can understand it. You will never have to memorize a price/efficiency/volume variance equation again if you understand where it's coming from.

Finance – there were so many equations in B6 and B3 that it was all about memorization by the end.

I am still waiting to see how my study methodology worked out – get my score next week!

How much time are you working with? That will depend what study plan to apply. I failed BEC the first time this year with 4 weeks of studying and following the “Becker way” most of the way. Gave myself an extra week the second time around and applied NINJA method from the beginning, and passed!

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! 😀

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently 🙂

    Thanks for the replies.

Amay- I would like to complete all sections in 12 months. I know I can take more time for the first section, but I would rather get a study method in place now.

I work full time so I can study after work and weekends. I am doing everything I can to get 25 hours out of a 24 hour day.

I forgot to mention that I do have the Ninja 10 point combo and I do not know how I am going to work it in at this point.
