Hey everyone.

How important is to join the AICPA or your state’s organization after getting your license? Are there a lot of benefits? Would you pick the AICPA over your state specific org or do both?

I'm also curious about this. I've heard one of the main benefits of joining is the access CPE. Since the Big 4 offer their own CPE, is it still worth it? I've also heard that the Big 4 will pay for your membership. Is that true?

IMO, one of the best benefits is the insurance coverage available to AICPA members. http://www.cpai.com

I was wondering about this myself – seems like it's worth it if someone else is paying your fees 😉 Otherwise, it's really expensive once you are a licensed CPA. I already used my first year free membership and I have to pay $50 for the second year so I can get a discount on the Ethics Exam – I'd be paying $25 more overall but the price would include the membership.

As far as CPE – I guess you'd have to conduct a cost-benefit analysis to see if it pays off 🙂 I am planning to do an extensive research on the CPE courses once I am done with the exam. Some websites/firms offer free webinars.

Unless my firm pays for my membership or strongly recommends membership, I will probably pass for the time being. The only benefit that I could see being applicable to me is the auto & homeowner's insurance discount, and I doubt the discount is enough to justify the $225 annual fee. I'd consider joining my state society for the networking opportunities, but that's even more expensive.
