AMT – To study or not to study

AMT might be the death of me when it comes to individual income tax. I have been studying it relentlessly and still can’t seem to grasp the concept. I have the majority of other individual income tax concepts mastered. Is it worth it to keep trying to understand or should I just move on.

    Thank you!!!

I wish I could give you a straight answer. I had an instructor tell me that some tests could have 10-12 points on a topic like AMT, while other tests may have none or only 1-2 points. There are a few YouTube videos out there that helped me to understand AMT when it wasn't clicking when I used Becker. Maybe look at those to see if they help clarify?

It just seems that the one topic you glaze over is the one that you get 5 questions on. I'd try to get a grasp of it. YouTube or Google'ing helps sometimes.

    AUD: 84 - Oct. 2013
    BEC: 83 - Feb. 2014
    REG: 91 - May, 2014
    FAR: 68, 96 - Oct. 2014...DONE

My Tax II professor in college told my class not to break your back over AMT and not really bother with it. She said that we would see a couple questions at most on AMT, if at all. She got a 99 on REG, so I feel like her opinion has substance haha

I think the rule goes: Anytime you skip a topic or wish it won't be on you exam, it ends up being on your exam. Case in point – today. I took REG and I knew everything about ___, ____, ____, and ____. Unfortunately there was a lot of __, which was a small topic in Becker.

Basically, know everything and if you don't know AMT, get to know it.

    Good luck!

    Passed all sections.

The best way to ensure that a topic appears on your exam is to not study it. Be familiar with AMT. If you are solid with the other tax topics then you'll get there on AMT with more practice!

My second try I focused on tax and had a much better grasp on 1231/1245/1250, property/like kind exchanges, AMT. I watched Jeff's AMT video on youtube a couple of times. It helps that individual and corp AMT are kind of similar, so I studied it by comparing the two.

It stinks having to learn all of that stuff! Hang in there! Think of it this way, you do not want to have to re-study for a re-take.

    Good luck!

1231/1245/1250 def. study. AMT, I personally don't think it's critical in passing. Use your time wisely.
