Anti-Anxiety Medication

Has anyone here ever taken a lorazepam or two right before sitting for the exam? I’ve thought about it before, I tend to get very anxious by the time I get to the test center. By the time I sit in front of the computer, my hands are shaking and my confidence waivers. I decided against it though thinking it may affect my concentration or just make me feel tired. This guy I spoke to yesterday told me meds helped him tremendously, like it made him feel very confident and relaxed.

Any thoughts? This is my last exam, hopefully, and I think I’ll be more anxious than ever.

I've never done it. However, take a melatonin the night before to help you sleep if needed. I'd also recommend running. It's the best form of stress relief IMO. Not only for this exam but other stuff too.

Just relax, continue to do a number of practice MCQs and also make sure you do Replica Practice CPA Exams. Practice makes perfect so that when you get on actual game day the “nerves” won't be as bad. Lord knows you don't want to get “hooked' on any of these medications lol.

Caeser1991, thanks for the suggestion! I sleep fine the night before, the anxiety creeps in on my way to the test center. I agree that exercise helps with stress, maybe I'll do some jumping jacks in the testing room.

John Tucker, it's not really a matter of my feeling unprepared it's moreso the pressure I feel sitting for such an important exam. Do people get hooked on those meds? I would only take them on an ‘as needed' basis.

@RedSoxFan77 and all, How did you manage your anxiety during job interview? Did you take any medication prior? If so, what is it? I have big time problem prior and during job interview, networking and also CPA exam. The night before, I could never sleep even though I tried so hard and I never finished a big portion of simulation parts of the three exams I took, but still managed to pass them with decent scores (I guess over preparation helped). The main issue for me would be during the interview because the interviewer expects me to be able to handle pressure/anxiety well, show confidence and be a good communicator.

    Thanks 🙂

RedSoxFan – if you don't normally take anti-anxiety meds on a regular basis, then you should probably not take them right before an exam to find out what they will do. Years ago, I had to take anti-anxiety medicine for a short time (going through a rough divorce). It can knock you on your keester. I hated how it made me feel and told my doctor that it was a no. We then talked about “other” things I could do when my stress got me too worked up. I found that washing my hands with cold water helped – rubbing your hands is soothing and the jolt of cold gives the brain a different physical sensation so you aren't focused on the anxiety.

Yes, the anti-anxiety meds are addictive. The best person to talk to this about is your doctor – but absolutely do not “test” how it works on exam day. As you know, you need to be sharp and on your game.

I take anti-anxiety meds; and they are milder than those you mentioned. Nevertheless, I've learned from experience not to take my pills in the morning, or else I am lethargic for the entire day.

    Bottom line: do not attempt.

@RedsoxFan77 .. When nothing can calm you down, its time to fall back to praying. Pray. say a small prayer when you feel stressed in the exam room. Try it.. it will help. Leave it in his hands and keep answering the questions.

If you were not medicated for the other exams don't start now (it can really affect your performance). Green tea also helps start drinking it now and see how you handle it. Hot tea worked for me gave me the caffeine and calm effect I needed. Subway also has the honey and green tea cold drink (its okay) but I dont like my tea with sugar, but you might like it). (last option if you hate the taste – green tea extract but make sure you get a good brand at amazon or wholefoods).

Have a cup and attempt a couple MCQs. Have it with protein not without food.

If you take melatonin make sure you get 8hrs of sleep.Don't start taking it the week of the exam, any medications affects your body differently when you are under stress.

    Good luck…
