Any advice for prepping for REG sims?

I just took the Reg exam yesterday and totally dropped the ball on the sims. I honestly didn’t put a lot of time focusing on studying for the sims because most people I talked to, including seeing various post on this site, made it sound like if you focus on MCQs and get the concepts down that you’d fine and that should not spend too much on practice sim. While I obviously didn’t have a deep understanding of ALL concepts, I felt like I was a prepped as I could be.

However, the sims I got yesterday were not at all what I expected, with the exception of a couple. They very difference from the sim on the AICPA example test and the handful of the NINJA sims that I did do. There were two in particular that I really wasn’t even sure how I was suppose to answer the question as I didn’t think they were clear enough in their instructions. Unfortunately I felt like I ended up just plugging in numbers from the question, which I really had no basis in.

With how awful I felt those sims went, I cannot even see it being feasible that I stand any chance of passing. With that, I am gearing up for a re-take and looking for any guidance on prepping better for the sims.

Should I use NINJA’s? Again, I did do a small handful of these and did fine but most of the questions I got on the exam were not all like the type of sims I got on the exam.

Don't be sure you failed over SIMS until you get your score! I know you probably feel terrible about them…but I always do as well. REG is the one exam I haven't taken yet so I can't directly relate. But how did you feel about MCQ? That will probably be the best indicator. If you felt prepared, I'm sure you did a heck of a lot better than the poor fool who went in not knowing whats what and struggled through the MCQs as well.

On FAR I felt fairly confident about MCQs and then awful about SIMS…maybe a little more than 50%… and got in the 80s. On Audit I knew I aced the MCQs but then felt like I didnt even get 1/2 of the SIMS right…and couldn't even find my research sim…and scored a 98. I have no idea how they divy up scores, but what I do know is not to write anything off as a sure fail until you see your score!

    AUD: 98
    REG: 91
    BEC: 86
    FAR: 83

DONE DONE DONE and DONE all on the first try! It IS possible, just keep on studying!

I'm planning to practice with Becker SIMs until my exam date. It'll be my 1st time taking REG so I'm mentally preparing for the worst.

no amount of studying could have prepared me for my REG sims yesterday…its very hard for to explain without violating the content disclosure rules, but im just gonna say “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP#@U)P@#UIPILJAKJFLKDUS)({GPI){_S(#O{RIP:>MXNNC A?{@#()$*@)#*$(_@)($+@)#”

@eschierm, I felt the SAME way when I took REG a week ago. I literally plugged in numbers and for some of the sims, I wasn't sure what they were looking for… I am gearing up for a REG retake and I plan on attempting to practice the SIMs using Ninja MCQ next time around. All the best man

In my opinion, the only way to prepare you for SIMs is to master the concepts through a disgustingly large amount of MCQs.

FAR some time in april 2016
BEC most likely the end of February 2016
AUD most likely in the beginning of april 2016
    REG 2/14/16

My best advice, with prepping for REG Sims, is become familiar with the IRC. They will help you so much during your Sims. Also learn the concepts, Sims are nothing but the concepts in a different form than you are used to seeing.

    AUD - 78
    BEC - 77
    FAR - 76
    REG - 80
    Texas CPA

    BEC - 77 (5/16)
    AUD - TBD (8/16)
    REG - 80 (1/16)
    FAR - 76 (8/15)

What is so difficult with the REG sims? Is it tricky wording, extraneous information to sift through or complex calculations?

    AUD 11/15 91
    BEC 1/16 83
    REG 2/16 79
    FAR 7/16

Shovel – depending on the question, I would say it was really any combination of three. I think some of the sims threw extra info in there to confuse me, and it worked. Also, I didn't spend enough time trying to become familiar with the IRC search. When it came time to use the authoritative literature, I really had a hard time finding what I needed to look for. Lastly, confusing wording made it difficult. I wasn't even sure how to appropriately answer a couple of the questions since I was perplexed on what they were even asking.

Don’t think that you failed. Personally, I could tell my MCQs were getting harder, which is a good sign. My sims were out of left field. I only got one right, the rest were complete guesses, that I knew were not correct. I even bombed the research questions. I passed with 88.

If you were strong with MCQs, don’t stress about it.

    Good luck!

I agree with all others. Don't be sure you failed over SIMS until you get your score!
