Any book recommendations?

Hey everyone this might be the wrong kind of place to ask, but does anyone have any recommendations for finance related books? I enjoy learning about different things that are finance related, but when I try to search for this online all I get is the typical “get rich quick” or “how to invest” type of books. For example, I recently read a book about high-frequency trading that I enjoyed quite a bit. Another example would be something related to the 08/09 financial situation. Anyone else into this kind of stuff that can chime in with something good? Thanks!

I am guessing you read Flash Boys? You should look into other books by Michael Lewis such as Liar's Poker and The Big Short (which discusses key factors that led up to the financial crisis).

    Other recommendations:

A Random Walk Down Wall Street

    Capital in the Twenty-First Century

“Stop Acting Rich” is good…it debunks the myths that your average rich person buys expensive stuff.

The average millionaire wears a Timex and drives a Camry according to the book. Interesting.

The Most Important Thing by Howard Marks.

    Quick, easy, very good.

As mentioned earlier, Liar's Poker is good entertainment.

“The Smartest Guys in the Room – The Enron Scandal” is good, but not really about finance and more about auditing and what mark to market accounting is all about.

“Freakonomics” is another one that keeps popping up on my Kindle, but I haven't read it.

“Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell is good, also not really finance related, but a fantastic insight into how people do what they do.

“The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg is excellent and should be required reading in every college curriculum.

“Freakonomics” is awesome. “Devil Take the Hindmost”, “Your Money and Your Brain”, and “The Millionaire Next Door” are all good reads.

    Not finance, but worth reading!

“Freakonomics” is an extremely easy read, and is simple to understand. Talks about the economy through Roe vs. Wade, drug dealers, and corrupt sumo wrestling. What?! Yes, the book comes out of left field in the most intellectual way. They came to speak at my college, and it was very interesting.

I love that book The Smartest Guy in the Room. It really makes me think there needs to be a cap on how much money someone makes on stocks of their company. That one guy made $500 million then left Enron and I don't think he got into any trouble. $500 million. how can someone take that from a company and leave, that system needs to be relooked at.

Don't get Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Dumb book. One dad buys and sells houses, makes money, the other dad doesn't, the end. I still don't understand how that book was so popular.

“How the Mighty Fall” – Jim Collins … one of the best business books I've ever read.

“Rework” by Jason Fried is probably THE best business book I've read based on how many times I've read/listened to it.

Rich dad poor dad is a great one I think. As mentioned above. Also, a guy I've known for years is a financial advisor and just got his book published and on Amazon a few weeks ago. It's called “Safe Money” by brad pistole. I ordered it and it hasn't come in yet so I can't attest to its value yet, but I imagine it'll be pretty worthwhile.

“The average millionaire wears a Timex and drives a Camry according to the book.”

Pretty sure Warren Buffet has lived in the same house for 50+ years. I thought I also read somewhere that he was driving a 1980 something Lincoln for a while, but apparently has since traded up. 🙂

I just finished “The Fall of the House of Zeus.” Not really a finance book, as it deals more with law and politics. Its about the Dickie Scruggs case. Extremely interesting.

As a couple others mentioned “Freakonomics” is great, and now there is a second book in the series “Super Freakonomics” which is also great. Anything by Malcolm Gladwell is a good read and broadly applicable, Dan Ariely is really interesting as well, and as others mentioned Michael Lewis has some really good books.

If you are looking for more technical type accounting/finance books, I would recommend:

    – Quality of Earnings – by Thornton O'glove

    – Financial Shenanigans – by Howard Schilit

    – Creative Cash Flow Reporting – by Charles Mulford

    – Accounting for Value – by Stephen Penman

    – The Manual of Ideas – by John Mihaljevic

    – Competition Demystified – by Bruce Greenwald

If you are in to data analysis at all (no need to be an expert, just need to find it interesting) I would recommend:

    – The Signal and the Noise – by Nate Silver

    – Predictive Analytics – by Eric Siegal
