I was just curious if anyone had gotten their CGMA yet? It launched on the 31st of January. I am already starting to see people on Linkedin with it.

So you have to have your CPA and then meet the requirements and that's it? This is the first I've heard about it.

It's not cute actually. It's annoying. A few weeks ago I asked about the PMP certification and the thread got blown up by people making jokes about being a pimp. No one answered my question. This was my payback. I feel better now.

Yeah, that's my understanding of it right now. I got it. We will see how they market it

If that's the case, what's the purpose of it? Will they eventually turn it into a exam based certificaiton or something? It seems like just another CMA type designation. Just falls way below the gold standard of the CPA.

Just got mine. We'll see. I was going to take the CMA, but I honestly think that this will trump CMA certificate holders within a few years.

You really think this would trump the CMA considering you need to pass two exams to get the CMA certification? Doesn't seem likely if the CGMA only takes work experience past the CPA. I probably wrong.

Call me jaded but to qualify you have to :

    Pass the CPA exam

    Get your license

Become a VOTING MEMBER OF THE AICPA

    Have the requisite work experience.

Ummmm does anyone other than me think this is just a way for the AICPA to drum up revenue and force people to join? Some bogus designation…not that I will not eventually get it. But I assume that if you drop out of the AICPA or renounce your ‘citizenship' as a show of force for the way they are master manipulating the grading system to drum up business, you would lose the designation when you stop paying your dues.

Just some thoughts I might be way off. I just didn't see any real qualification beyond becoming a CPA…Oh well except for that AICPA dues thing.

@jjm1181 – Yes, because in a few years a test will be required to join. I just think that the CMA has not marketed itself very well.

With the CIMA/AICPA backing, it may take a few years, but I think it will become the standard for management accounting in the US.

Do I think it is a way of generating revenue for AICPA/CIMA/State Boards? Yes, especially with the required CPE's

It's my understanding that it will become exam based. Initially its only being offered to AICPA voting members but I think it's going to change. I think they only allowed this to drum up some interest because right now why would you do it if you're already a CPA unless they gave you an incentive. I think it will eventually gain some traction and you'll see more and more people willing to become a CGMA.

hustlehard, I agree with you. I don't think the CMA has been marketed well. There are tons of people in the workforce that still don't know what it is. I was going to do a CMA and was advised by several recruiters to forget it and focus on the CPA.

I personally find the CGMA a dubious credential for the simple fact that this credential is predicated on you being a CPA. That's like seeking to get licensed as a dentist but having to be licensed as an MD first. Doesn't make sense to me.

If I get a management accounting credential it will be a CMA.

PS: CPApending, you spoke my thoughts very well.

The biggest issue with the IMA is the fact that the CMA is not all that well known and marketed. Additionally, while we all may hate the AICPA at times, the level of organization and formality followed for the CPA designation is simply exceptional when compared with the IMA. On paper they have a pretty good program, but because of their size, or rather lack thereof, they simply don't have the man power to compete.

I did the CMA tests first because I qualified to take them, while I was still short on on credits for the CPA. Having a good idea on the content of the CPA now, I will say that the CMA is a 100 times more applicable to what I do (upper management for companies in the private sector). BEC doesn't really begin to touch the depth of the material that is covered in the CMA as it relates to costing, manufacturing, etc. As I was studying for my CMA I actually learned stuff that I still use every single day- I loved it. I can't say that I will feel the same way about the REG or AUD sections of the CPA.

I've worried a little about the CGMA designation, but the truth is that as of right now not very many people know what it is, especially in my field. Most of the time when the CMA has come up people do know what the CMA is. If they don't its easy enough to explain. At least with the CMA its possible to say “Its a designation which required me to pass two pretty difficult tests and requires I maintain a certain number of CPEs.” Vs: “Oh its something I paid for because I'm already a CPA”.
