Should I apply as a student or experienced? Does it make a difference? Suggestions?

Graduation January 2014 (10 months ago)

    150 Credits

    GPA 3.05

    Passed FAR, REG

I had 3 business development internships during college. I currently manage an eBay store and work as a bookkeeper.

My main concern is that 5/6 of my final classes I got C’s.

Since you don't have public accounting experience, I'm thinking they'll probably not take you on as an experienced hire. Generally, if you read their job posting descriptions, experienced hires require experience in public. Since you only graduated in January, you should see if you can still get assistance through your career services, although you've missed most of the on campus recruiting deadlines more than likely. Good luck!!

You would not be eligible as an experienced hire. You will also need to do something to make up for your gpa, passing all the tests for example. Then you'll need to get into a recruitment pool some how.

I have a similar question. I am working as a sales tax auditor, would they consider that experienced even though I have no experience in public accounting?

Just as an ego boost we may bring you on as an “experienced” staff so you get a slight increase in rank and pay, but you're still a staff that knows nothing and would be treated as such. (I should say knows nothing about our internal workings, any knowledge you have would obviously be beneficial)

Where do you think someone with 3.5 years of forensic, valuation, & transaction services would fit in?

Staff don't usually specialize. The only way he'd get into a specific subset of a line is if he was brought on a senior or above, which is really a stretch. It could be possible, you never know. But as a staff you don't get put into stuff like SALT exclusively, though you may very well be called upon for those engagements.

Hello, I'm replying to this since I have recently spoken to recruiters from KPMG, Deloitte, and EY. You are supposed to apply as an experienced hire 18 months from the date of your graduation. The recruiter from KPMG heavily emphasized this. Ask your school's career center if you can still attend Meet the Firms. Get their emails and start networking into an interview stat.
