Are Deloitte people really that bad?

I’ve heard in so many situations, from different people, who work for different companies, that Deloitte employees are all arrogant, smug, smartasses. I actually find it funny how consistent the comments are. I only personally know one person who works for Deloitte and she certaintly fits that description. So is this really true about Deloitte?

I also read an article that compared the Big 4 to the four houses of Hogwartz and Deloitte was Slytherin of course haha.

I know someone who is a manager with them and she says they work her to the bone! I also interviewed with them and had a very bad interviewer- he wasn't professional, didn't ask appropriate questions, and was to busy looking else wear instead of making eye contact (if you know what I mean). So it was poor reflection of that company and I'm glad I didn't get asked back for a second interview 🙂

I think Big 4 in general is smug and arrogant. Not the employees, but the idea. They do absolutely zero recruiting at my school, which means it was impossible for me to get on there. I graduated from an urban University aimed primarily at working-adults. Graduated with a 4.0 in accounting and less than a year later have 3 exams passed on the first try.

Their loss. I'm lucky to have gotten on at a mid-market firm that pays the same and only requires 50-55 hours/week during February-April.

A friends husband works for Deloitte and he's a really nice guy. I've never seen him in a professional situation so I don't know if he's a jerk at work, but he's a lot of fun in social situations.

I work for a public company in their tax department, and one of the firms we outsource stuff to is Deloitte. In my experience they are very friendly and nice, but also from my experience every firm varies significantly by geographic area. I have worked with all four of the big 4 in some respect, and as with any organization that large, there isn't any real set persona. There certainly tends to be a similar attitude/personality of the team members on each team, but that is largely due to the manager selecting who they want working with them.

An experience I had that kind of demonstrates this, we were working with 2 separate teams from the same big 4 firm, for 2 different projects. The one team was extremely friendly, easy going, and very responsive and engaging when you had questions or concerns. While the other team was very arrogant, dismissive, and condescending when you had questions or concerns. This was two teams from the same firm, but they were out of two different offices in two different cities, point being they vary considerably by location in my experience.

On a kind of side note, one other thing I have noticed that influences how they act, is the personality of the person at your organization whom makes the hiring decision to bring them in. After all the big 4 are really service organizations, and so they tend to be very adaptive to their customers personalities if they are good at their job.

You shouldn't apportion these kind of behavior to some employees in Deloitte only, truth is, the accounting profession has been invaded by a few egoistic individuals and its really creating a bad image for the profession. Some accountant thinks the corporate world revolves around them and no company will survive without them. That's like living in a fools paradise, because we're all dispensable at the end of the day.

In summary, I think big 4 has its share of “demi-gods, just like any other public accounting firm, as well as private.

The thing with the Big4 is that they are so ginormous that you're bound to have a few jerks working for them in any city. In my experience the difficult ones are usually some 5th or 6th year senior with terrible leadership skills on a bad audit team.

There is also this attitude that what goes on in an audit room stays in an audit room which means sometimes horrible things get said (discriminatory) and people get away with it and/or go along with it/stay silent. I guess you just have to kind of roll with the punches long enough to get where you want to go with your career.

No no, Ravenclaw is the best house for obvious reasons

And Big 4 personalities vary office to office. The stereotype for Deloitte at my alma mater (heavy Big 4 recruiting pool) was that Deloitte hired robotic accountants who could churn work papers out 24 hours a day. Obviously not true.

I have an associate who's a Senior in Risk Management and she's always been very confident and cocky. Always reminds me that she's the smartest person in the world, that her face is the most beautiful, that her car is so nice and powerful…etc.

She got an offer from Deloitte immediately after the first interview. I know three more people some at the Senior Levels and they have an arrogance about them and will never ever help anyone get an interview, even close friends.

Are these the type of people they want to hire? Or is it a statistical anomaly?

Another friend at PWC is also very full of himself, and he told me that to get offers I need to portray arrogance rather than humility. What do you know? I have two job offers and more coming… :0. GOD HELP US ALL!

I interned at PwC, started my career at Deloitte and now I'm a senior at EY.

You'll find arrogance at all levels across many different types of jobs. The Big4 has a variety of different personalities like any other work place. Most people are just trying to make a living and have normal lives 🙂

I'm sorry if you all have had bad experiences with folks from Deloitte. I promise they're not all bad. Actually most aren't.

In my experience Deloitte & EY had staff that were more reserved while PWC and KPMG were the more outgoing type. Some people (esp campus recruits) would mistake the introverted/reservedness as arrogance which isn't true at all once u get to know them.

@mystical – why are they so arrogant/proud of having a shitty work/life balance?
