    Hi Ninja’s

I’ll like to start by saying that this forum is one of the greatest ideas when it comes to support and guidance while going through this process.

I recently (last Friday) found out I failed AUD one more time with a 73! I’m completely crushed… I just don’t even know where or how to pick up the pieces after Friday….

I have great home support by my husband and great friends including a friend that is also studying for the exam…so she understands exactly this process.

I think the problem is ME! I feel defeated – and plain stupid to be honest! I’ve gone into AUD being extremely prepared – I’ve used Wiley-Becker-Ninja materials….simply don’t know what to do!

I want to become a CPA… I knew this road wasn’t going to be easy, but this is a lot more than what I even thought this would be… it’s not only hard on me, but hard on my husband and small children….

I’m currently (trying) to study for BEC –

should I retake AUD beginning of October?

As I’m writing this with tears on my eyes, I’m begging for help at this point! I need support and some sense of direction!

    Thank you Ninja’s!

    Hi Priscilla,

The problem is not you and you're not stupid! I took audit 4 times before I passed. You just need to find another way to challenge your mind and looking at the material in a different way. I found that doing ALL the MCQs in the book and in the test bank was extremely helpful. I used Yaegar CPA study materials and it also comes with an additional test bank online. Practice MCQs everyday! The first time you go through a module's MCQs it will take you a few hours for some modules – like Internal Control, Reporting, etc. After you go through the additional questions – keep reviewing them everyday until your eyes get tired. The additional MCQs are a great challenge to see how well you really know the material.

When are you scheduled to sit for BEC? I would say stick to AUD – but since you already passed a section your time is ticking. Focus on BEC and take AUD end of October depending on when you sit for BEC.

Don't give up!! You got this.

    Thank you brittpone123!

I'm planning to sit for BEC ending of this month (if I'm able to get through material) then take 2 weeks to review AUD and sit end of October –

If not fully prepared for BEC then BEC beginning of October and AUD end of October –

    Thoughts?

Can you share with us your study routines? I think most people struggle to find an effective method of studying and it's much more evident for someone's first exam. Having a third party objectively look at what you're doing and giving suggestions may be helpful.

    REG - 88 - 8 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio/Flashcards, Wiley TB)
    FAR - 87 - 10 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio)
AUD - 98 - 6 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio, Ninja MCQ)
    BEC - 87 - 2 Weeks (Becker & Ninja Audio)

I would take at least 2 months to fully prepare for BEC – unless you want to squeeze in an attempt? I would say try BEC beginning of October and AUD end of October. When does your REG expire?

I agree with QuesoDip – what is your study schedule? How many hours are you studying and what is the quality of your studying? (Are you able to go to library or find a quiet place at home with no distractions?)

    Hi QuesoDip

    Thank you for responding.

I'm not currently working so I put about 25-30 study hours per week on material. I re-did Becker lectures – and MCQ's by topics using Wiley-Becker and Ninja MCQ's banks. I will switched every couple of days to challenge myself with different questions – My scored were in the 90's and completed ALL mcq's in each software – I also practice and completed ALL simulations in all 3 software's.

It sounds like you're trying a brute force attack and it's not working, which is very strange lol. Do you take notes? Did you receive one of those comparison scorecards people get when they fail a section?

If you can clearly identify which topics you know vs which topics you clearly don't know, you can effectively focus on your weak topics.

    REG - 88 - 8 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio/Flashcards, Wiley TB)
    FAR - 87 - 10 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio)
AUD - 98 - 6 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio, Ninja MCQ)
    BEC - 87 - 2 Weeks (Becker & Ninja Audio)

    Yeap!

Taking notes- made my own flascards also –

    read Ninja notes and flascards

I think my weak point is FAR concepts – I got 2 FAR simulations during last exam – sims are usually my weak point- but I've practice them – even AJE's and simulations like crazy! I just don't understand why getting the extra 2-3 points could be so hard for me!!!!!!

Because you're not working, I would sit for BEC at the end of the window (why waste a window), and I would devote September to AUD taking the test on the first day of the month.

I failed AUD twice with a 74 and 72, after my 72 I went and bought Becker and got a 93. I think the best way to remember AUD is to make notecards for every mnemonic in Becker and type of report and read the Becker lecture outlines constantly. I don't know how many times I went through my notecards and Becker outlines, but if you still have access to your Becker, I advise doing that. Also for the sims, use the AL. On my pass, I used the AL for 2 other large SIMS word for word, the AL can be used to an extent for every sim (outside of the journal entry ones) so use the AL. You just have to learn where the line is between actually knowing the MCQ or just memorizing them.

    Hi Priscilla,

I had a very similar experience with AUD. and I just found out I finally passed yesterday. Don't give up. Your scores are so close to passing, you just need to adjust your study strategy!

I'll give you a bit more detail about my struggles with AUD. I took BEC first and passed with relative ease. It gave me confidence and I proceeded with AUD. I was a finance major and had never taken any audit classes in college and didn't have any audit work experience. I knew I was gonna have a harder time with the AUD exam. I studied with CPAExcel and spent about 2-3 months on my first try. I didn't find the material to be particularly hard, so it didnt hit me until I saw my first score – 66. I thought maybe I didn't put in enough studying time or got a bit too comfortable since I passed my first exam without struggling or stressing. So I immediately rescheduled to take it again while the material was still fresh in my mind. I reviewed everything using the same studying material and did all of the practice questions again. I spent about a month reviewing. I felt better after my second try at AUD, but scored only two points higher at 68. This is when I really started panicing because I felt like I put in the time and effort.I also never felt like the material was too difficult and I didn't understand it. On top of that, my clock started ticking since I had already passed BEC. So I decided to move onto another section to gain some confidence. I spent about 2 months studying REG and barely passed it.

At this point, I decided to give AUD another try because I wanted to have undivided attention for FAR and leave it as my last section and give it my all. My third try at AUD was Feb 2014, my BEC credit was to expire in Aug 2014. So essentially I had to pass AUD and FAR ( the hardest and heaviest sections in my opinion) in 6 months. This was not at all how I had planned my exams out. and as you can imagine, I was really stressed out since I really did not want to retake any sections. I should mention that for my second and third try at AUD, I purchased NINJA notes and Wiley Test Bank. I read the notes multiple times and did all of the questions in the Test Bank. My third attempt at AUD, I was fairly confident I passed. but instead, I scored a 73. This was the hardest fail because I was really running out of time. Finally, I started studying for FAR in March 2014, and scheduled to take it at the end of May. the CPAExcel for FAR was way too overwhelming, I had two textbooks to read, they were both as thick as college textbooks, if not more. and 1100 MCQs to go through. Somehow, I managed to do all of this in 2 months. but I didnt feel like I had a good grasp of the material nor did I feel like I absorbed enough to do well on the exam. At this point, I switched to Becker. This was a huge change. The way Becker organized the material and explained it made SO MUCH more sense to me. I read through all 10 chapters and did about half the questions in just over 3 weeks. I really wished I had switched to Becker sooner. but lucky for me, I passed FAR on my first try as well.

Now it was June, I still had AUD to tackle. I had no confidence but knew it was my last shot before I lose credit for BEC. I used Becker this time and surprisingly did well on all of the practice questions. which made no sense to me since there was never a point in my studying process that I felt like I finally understood everything better or a light bulb went off. because I was doing the same thing, reading every chapter and doing all of the MCQs. I spent 6 weeks re-studying AUD using Becker and was SO SCARED that I would fail again.

I just found out yesterday I passed with a 97. It took me all weekend to check my score because I couldn't bare the thought of failing AUD and losing credit for BEC. but it's such a big relief to know I'm finally done.

My advise to you is to try to understand every question you answered wrong. figure out if your studying material just doesn't work for you. I know I study better when I have a big picture of how everything is connected and related to each other, then dive into each chapter and learn the details. CPAExcel has a whole bunch of bite size lectures which really confused me and I wasn't able to see the big picture. It's possible that your studying material just does not suit your learning style.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to work and study while you have young kids. but you are so close to passing, don't be discouraged. Adjust your studying strategy. or perhaps move onto other sections first. I can't tell you how stupid and discouraged I felt every time I failed. especially since I never really struggled with school before. It was both shocking and sad and discouraging. But I had commited to studying for the CPA. I had sacrificed my weekends and evenings studying, so I knew giving up wasn't an option. I really believe if I can pass after failing so many times, you can too! If you read other people's posts in this forum, you'll see that a lot of people have struggled with AUD. It really is a tricky section. Don't give up! Your efforts will pay off eventually.

I wish you the best and good luck with studying!

@myl3 Your response helps me. I am in the same boat you were. I only have AUD left and failed it twice previously. I have 3 shots at it (Aug, Nov, and Feb), but the fails have been my worst scores in the whole CPA exam (65 both times). I previously used Wiley before it expired and now use Ninja, and in both banks, I score consistently in the high 70s, low 80s. I can probably bring that up, but in FAR and REG, I was scoring in the high 60s, low 70s and passed relatively comfortably. I don't necessarily think it's that I don't know the material, but rather I am misunderstanding it. Reading it too fast, missing key words, etc… But yea, thank you – your response gives me confidence and a little more clarity on how to tackle AUD.

@ OP, why not push the 2nd test to late November? If Thanksgiving might pose a problem, then mid-November? My personal preference has to always minimize the waiting period, so I would take the first test around the 15-20th of the month, and the 2nd test around the 25-30th of the following month. Especially with retakes, you are probably not going to completely relearn the material unless you purposely delay retaking it so you can tackle it with a fresh perspective, so the main focus should really be on passing BEC.

I haven't had my scores in my signature for a long time. I actually took them out before I finished, because I realized they were bringing me down. They were a constant reminder of how long I'd been on the slow train through hell. They were also a reminder that some people didn't think I was “good enough”, “smart enough”, “fast enough” and just plain “enough”. It was a reminder that I didn't deserve those letters after my name. I went to a very dark place before I got my ticket punched and got off.

There is a reason you aren't passing. You just have to figure out the reason. For me, the main reason was thyroid cancer. Here are my scores:

    BEC – 66, 67, 69, 72, 82*, 85

    AUD – 71, 73, 70, 83

    REG – 61, 66, 70, 70, 71, 69, 84

    FAR – 71, 73 76*, 73, 73, 73, 85

    *Expired

No where on my license does it say how many times I sat for each exam. No where on my license does it list my final passing scores.

There were other reasons, besides the cancer, that I wasn't passing exams. I had lost faith in myself. I had lost all confidence in my ability. I felt like I wasn't “enough”. What turned it all around for me was getting mad. I had spent 5 years trying to pass only to find out that I had cancer. I felt like I had wasted 5 years of my life, not to mention 5 years and 2 feet of my son's life, trying to pass a test.

But the exam taught me to stand up for myself. It taught me how to fight. I went from the fight of my life to the fight for my life. People ask me if I knew then what I know now, would I still have put myself, my family and my body through all of the late nights and early mornings studying. My answer is always the same. Yes!

You will get there. I promise! The only way to fail is to quit.

Let's just say this same thing happened to me with Audit. I took it many times with many failures always close with 73s and even the dreaded 74. I was using Becker over and over and it was just not working. I switched to using Wiley hardcover book and took the exam again and passed with a 90. Sometimes you have to see the info in a different way to get you to the next level. Also listening to Jeff's audio and his notes are helpful.

    FAR-42,75
    AUD-56,48,73,73,74-really,73,72,64,90 (this took multiple tries)
    BEC-36,65,67,71,76
    REG-55,54,66,81
