Guys, I am confused with test of control.

The book says control testing normally includes inquiry, observation, inspection and reperformance. However, there is a attribute sampling test which tests control. which classification does attribute sampling refers to? inspection? reperformance? or none of the four? Am I on the right track? So confused in Aud area

    You are mixing everything together.

Remember attribute sampling is a sampling approach used for testing of controls. Sampling is just picking your selection of what you are going to do those different internal controls testing. So, you will use attribute sampling to pick a selection of 25 items from your population and then you will either perform the tests by inquiry, observation, inspection or reperformance.

Hope that helps clarify things for you.

    Thank you.

Your post is really helpful. So sampling is for item selection and we still use 4 methods to test the items we select?

    REG - 88
    AUD - 99
    BEC - 87

Sampling is just used when the auditor wants to test less than 100% of the population of items.

Say there are 1,000,000 different transactions in a population and we want to make sure that the transactions were properly authorized. If we don't want to test each of the 1,000,000 transaction, we will use a sampling technique to select less than 100% to test in order to allow us be satisfied that the control can be relied upon in order to properly set detection risk.

You can use any method of testing controls with sampling. Sampling determines what/how many items you test, not really the method of testing. That is my understanding anyway.
