I’m 30 and thinking about studying for GMAT after my CPA exams.. partly to fulfil my 150 hours but hoping that it will give me an edge/open up some doors too.

How old are/were you when you started/finished your graduate program?

I started a part-time MBA program when I was 27 and finished when I was 30. It was actually structured to be a 4-year program but I doubled up the last year because I was going crazy!! Good luck!

I'm 22 and in a master's program but there are plenty of people over 30 who are in it as well. Some are even in their 50's and 60's I believe. Not sure if that's the reason you're asking, but 30 is definitely not too old to start.

    AUD - 11/30/12 - 89
    REG - 1/17/13 - 89
    FAR - 5/28/13 - 87
    BEC - 7/18/13 - 89

    Done!

I started my MBA when I was 21 and finished when I was 22 (a month or so before turning 23)… I really worked to get it completed in that time as I was on an athletic scholarship that ended the month that I completed the program. There's quite an incentive when you realize that you might have to pay for it yourself! I then proceeded to do nothing with some of the subsequent years in my 20's, so while I might have started/finished before most, the end result is more or less the same. 🙂

    thanks guys.

quick advice please. my situation – i have been in corporate/private accounting for about 2-3 years. I want to pursue a career change to public but not sure if it's a good move at my age. so I can't decide between MST vs Macc vs MBA.

what was your reason for your degree and what advice can you give me?

    thanks!

To get the best ROI for a graduate program like an MBA, you need to have a few years of real work under your belt (in my opinion).

I would get a lot more out of my MBA now at 35 than I would have at 23.

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 76
    REG - 92

I started mine at 31, finished it 2 years later at 33 (worked full time with husband and two kids). It is never too late to start. I delayed starting due to the GMAT, but I got a review book from the bookstore. It was a LOT easier than I thought it would be.

I started my MACC program at 24 and finished at 28! I worked full time in public accounting and learned the hard way that Tax Season and Grad School don't mix well for me, so it took a little longer to finish up considering I was attending 3 of 4 semesters offered per year. There were students of all ages in my program, even students in their 50's! I'm 30 also and you are definitely NOT too old to start a grad program!!! 😉

    Good Luck!!!! 🙂

    REG: 75 DONE 🙂
    AUD: 61, 71, 68, 92 DONE 🙂
    BEC: 76 DONE 🙂
    FAR: 72, 74, 79 DONE 🙂

I started my MBA when I was 29 and finished when I was 31. Due to a career change, I decided to go for my MST at age 46 and will finish next year at age 50. This year I also started the working toward my CPA license. 30 is in no way too old to start a masters program. There are more older students, like me, in my MST classes than you might think.

    REG - 11/5/2012 - 80
    BEC - 1/17/2013 - 76
    AUD - 2/22/2013 - 70 4/5/2013 - 75
    FAR - 5/28/2013 - 75 - Done!!!

Question: What do you call someone who only gets 75's and 76's on the four parts of the CPA exam?

    Answer: A CPA

I started my 2-year full-time MAcc program when I was 22. MAcc programs tend to have a younger average age than MBA programs (just in general), because its fairly common to get a MAcc right away after finishing your bachelor's, whereas MBA candidates tend to have a few years in the workforce (again, just in general). However, you are bound to get a wide variety of ages and experience in any program.

I got a ton out of my MAcc program- so I'm usually a fan of that route. The biggest difference between a MAcc and a MBA (w/accounting concentration) is the depth and breadth- a MAcc will provide you with some business breadth (usually) and a lot of depth in accounting, and an MBA (accounting) will provide you with a lot of business breadth and some depth in accounting. This is just a generalization- it will heavily depend on the school. Your decision will likely be based on the curriculum of each individual program you are looking at, not just the letters of the degree.

Did my full time MBA when I was 23 and finished in 11 months. I would agree with some of the posters on the board that I feel I would've gotten more out of it now that I have more experience under my belt. But I'm glad that's done.

    FAR - Bad Fail '11, Fail '12, Fail '13, PASS It's a miracle!
    AUD - Fail, PASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    BEC - PASS!!!!!!!!
REG - PASS!!!!!!!! And I'm done!
