Background Check

    Hello Guys,

I just got a verbal offer for a full time position, my first full time offer! I believe the company will soon start on background check. I don’t have any drug or criminal history.

I would like to ask, how does the “background check company” to verify the education and working history on my resume? Are they going to pull my tax returns history? also, what about the odd jobs I worked when I was at high school?

    Thank You.

I'm not 100%, but am pretty sure they're just checking criminal, civil, and probably credit records. Even if they had access, they wouldn't care about your tax returns-your credit report would give them better information anyway. Besides, would you want to work for a company that demands tax returns, social media log ins, kindergarten report cards, etc anyway?

there is no repository they can access to get your tax returns. so unless you provide them, they will not have access to them. there are databases that offer criminal history checks and civil cases. Believe it or not, you can even do an asset search and find out what a person has in their bank account for less than a $ 500 fee. can also get your soc number, dob, former addresses, home phone, cell phone, and possible email addresses, cars you own, license plate, vin too.

i believe banks can access your tax returns in some fashion as I've seen 2 separate instances lately where I read that and it surprised me. So i'm relying on what i read relative to the banks access.

Thanks for the info so far! So, how will they verify my working history? Do I have to talk to my current/former manager about it?

They can only do that by calling and talking with your past employers. Some ask if you mind if they contact them and others don't in my experience. They may be more interested in your references which they most always call and verify your work habits.

Has anyone ever been rejected after a job offer due to a credit check?

This has been bothering me for some time. I have a disgusting amount of debt in order to be able to make it through college, get started outside, extra classes for CPA exam, exam fees, & study material. I've never missed any payment and its gradually going down….but enough to prevent me from being independent (I dont want to go the audit route tho!). Has this ever been an issue for anyone here or heard of it being one?

@ibCPAsoon I will be interested in the answer to your question too. I have a bad credit rating as of the moment but hoping to build it up again once I landed in a more decent paying job.

@ibCPAsoon – my older brother has been rejected several times due to his credit score. He's not in accounting, but has still missed out on some good jobs. Though to be fair his credit isn't bad, it's downright pathetic-he had a whole mess of bad luck right out of college and hasn't been able to recover. Apparently companies don't understand some people have bad credit because they just don't make enough money, not because they can't manage credit.

Then again, until very recently my credit score was only barely on the upper side of iffy and it's never been a problem for me.

I would also make sure that your social media footprint does not contain anything that may damage your image. Those post on Facebook or Twitter about how much you love 1 Direction and Nickleback will cause you to lose all Credibility.

About reference check, who is making the call to my references? I wonder how long does the process take.
