BEC Becker – Poorly Structured!

Does any one else using Becker feel that the BEC chapters are poorly structured? Every lecture is 1 1/2 hrs – 2 1/2 hours! I don’t know about anyone else but I can’t focus for that long. Plus I think the MCQ should be broken down into subtopic. Seeing 111 MCQ for one topic is daunting for me and it’s so unorganized! :O Drives me crazy!

    Thanks!
    Kris

I actually switched from Wiley to Becker to pass BEC. I tried three times with Wiley and failed BEC and then moved to Becker to pass it. I do agree – it could be broken down better. I think one of the main problems is that there are so many formulas you have to memorize, which all have a chance of appearing on BEC.

I actually didn't listen to the lectures in my strong areas, like IT and a few other areas that I don't remember now. I focused heavily on my weakest BEC areas (economics and financial management) until I had them mastered. Best of luck!

On a side note, I really didn't care for all of the jokes and wasted time in the Becker lectures. I'd rather put my time listening to actual content and not on the lecturers telling stories about each other. Just a personal preference and a pet peeve, I suppose, but it really, really started to irritate the hell out of me.

@Kris.tina – the information is actually organized very well and there is a purpose to the organization. No doubt, there is a ton of homework and it can be very daunting. Make sure you watch ALL the lectures for one particular section (B1, B2, B3, etc) before doing the homework. Some of the questions do crossover between subtopics, so its important to have seen the material for the entire section.

I did go through a time that I felt the same way, but after I had completed B6, I could see that the material was actually well organized.

    @Mary

I actually find the Becker jokes entertaining. I must be studying too long and need to get a life!

I found the real world examples they use very helpful, even if they are a bit corny.

I suppose it's just preference. I found them entertaining at first but after that, especially when I was trying to learn and memorize different concepts, it started to get irritating. I don't mind the concepts but to me, it just seems like they go too far in trying to mock each other and it wastes time. I have always had issues staying focused and I think it just throws my focus off.

I personally think Becker is about as good of a review course as it gets. Do the lectures get boring and old? Definitely. But that happens with any review.. especially when you're exhausted with studying. Sometimes there is some overlap with questions being repeated in multiple sections but I don't mind that. Just helps reinforced it more. On a side note, I feel like people struggle with BEC because they just straight up want to memorize formulas and rules. If you understand in your head exactly what a direct labor efficiency or whatever other kind of variance is, you will understand how it is calculated without trying to remember all the x and y formula junk. Best of luck to everyone, this is definitely a sneaky test

I agree, 2 hour lectures for 1 section and then looking at 100+ HW questions is pretty daunting. But if you study BEC 1-3 together as a collective unit, concepts start to overlap.

My strategy was studying BEC1-3 together and 4, 5 and 6 separately.

Nope. I find Becker to great. I break it down nightly. I'll do the long lectures one night then the mcq for that section the next night. Any sections with short lectures I can do with their mcq the same night.

    2 hours per night

Get up, walk around, take it easy for 20 min then sit back down.

I've passed on the first try both of my test using Becker and now Ninja Notes Audio. I wouldn't suggest any other way to anyone looking to pass the CPA. Now, i've dropped 200 hours of study time for each exam too so that may have something to do with it…

I agree with you, OP. I'm studying for FAR right now and I much prefer to have 10 chapters broken up in small subsections than 6 chapters that cram 200+ multiple choice questions into one subsection. When I was studying for BEC I got so frustrated with B1 and B2 that I skipped forward and did B4 – B6 before returning to the first three chapters. It helped to boost my confidence and also made focusing on B2 and B3 easier, knowing I didn't have half the material still out there.

Just keep going, even if you feel like you're drowning. I remember thinking there was no way I could memorize all the formulas and get through those long chapters and MCQs with BEC, but I did, and you will too. One day at a time! 🙂

Wow, only 55 out of 94,000 candidates got an almost perfect score of 95.5 and above. The success rate is .0005. Those individuals must feel so proud.
