I took BEC yesterday and thought I'd come here to report my experience.

I will preface this by saying that I didn't study near enough the past two times I've taken BEC. The first time I took BEC, I studied half-heartedly, and then the two weeks before, I really slacked off and it showed in my grade. The second time I took it, I didn't really re-study like I should have and thought I could do okay. Yeah right. So, this is really my first go at studying hard for this test.

I'm really glad I saw Allyson post that the test was now adaptive. My first two testlets were of moderate difficulty, and both testlets took me about 30 minutes. I don't usually try to dwell on a question, and I have finished each test I've taken (including all sections–total of 6 before this one) with at least 30 minutes to spare, so this was normal timing for me.

I got to the third testlet and it was much more difficult than the other two. It took me an hour on its own. So by the end of that testlet, I had 57 minutes to finish the written communications.

I am very glad I read these forums prior to taking the test because I would have freaked out seeing a non-BEC written communication question. Two of my written comms were BEC related, but one wasn't. I did the two BEC related ones because I knew I could do well on those, and then saved the non-BEC one for last. I worked until the very last minute and finished it. I wrote a coherent essay, but I'm sure I didn't get the technical aspect right. I just focused on making my case in an organized and concise manner, even if the facts were wrong.

So, this is the first test that I've completed with no time to spare. I hope that doesn't scare any of you, but I've never had to watch my time before, so you may need to be aware.

And the lag time when loading the written communications was nothing. It was maybe 15 seconds for each one, but after that they loaded quickly when switching between them. There is a message before you take the exam that says you may experience some lag time, so the AICPA prepares you for it.

    Good luck to everyone!

Edited: Don't discount the corporate governance section, like everyone has said!

@ Megan, What about the calculation type problems? Did you have a lot? And cost accounting is said to be 10-12% of the exam, would you say that is about right?

Strategic Planning is 10-14% and Operations Management is 12-16%, which each are elements of cost accounting. I'd say those percentages are about right.

@wishfulthinking I separated those larger MCQ into smaller segments. I print out all the homework questions in the software and put them in a binder so I can have access to study even when I'm not by a computer. So I was able to take out those larger portions and separate them into more meaningful segments. I would separate the conceptual questions from the formulas first and then go further from there. It's helped me to stay organized too.

I walked out of the exam with my head held high. I really don't know how well I did…only the score will tell me that. The only thing I DO know is that I prepared the BEST way I could…and as long as I keep that attitude it gets me through the days easier.

I didn't stress about the written communications at all means they said they were grading on grammar and how well you write. I didn't think they were bad to be honest. I would concentrate more on working MCQ.

    FAR - 75! 🙂

@ Megan – Thanks! And Congratulations on having a baby….April is not too far away!

@ lynn2007 – THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! I really want to focus on each of the 5 chapters in Becker this week. I have a game plan for today and tomorrow to go through B1 – B3 and then Sunday go over B5 in detail and try to get through most of the HW MCQ on cost accounting that I haven't made it through yet! Then next week I'll just practice MCQ over and over! I really appreciate your advice!

@ wishfulthinking – I completely understand about getting through those MCQs on B5. It took me an entire day (last Saturday) to just get through those 141 questions. It's tough, but for me, it's the only way I can learn it. Just break it down into smaller sections (get 20-30 done at a time, take a break) and it will not seem so cumbersome!

Thanks Megan , I am taking my exam on the 26th and this is extremely helpful !! I have also taken BEC before in the old format twice before and got a 74 and 69 , so this time I really need to pull my act together…fingers crossed !!!

    @ wishful thinking

I totally agree with the number of questions on CHP 5 Becker , this is my weakest area- I was planning to go over them thoroughly again in my final review … but I doubt shall be able to go through all the 400 questions of chp 5 I marked all the questions I thought were tough , even though I got the answer correct the first time along with the ones I got wrong and plan on doing just those before my exam along with the ones from in the Wiley textbook ..…

    Hi all,

I just took the exam this morning.

Vent: It caught me totally off guard. It was a lot more theoretical than I thought and if it was adaptive then I failed =( because the questions never got longer although I wouldn't know because I had so few that actually required calculating things! Why was my exam so theoretical?

Also, funny thing happened, I got on of the WC's I got in FAR last year. This really pissed me off bc last year I dominated that question today I couldn't remember everything I wrote last time AND i ran out of time..

    Done venting.

All in all, to everyone who has to take it next week GOOD LUCK!! and It sounds like most of you are preparing very well. I think I was just unlucky on the type of questions I got. Some of the questions were very similar to the ones in Becker so yay for that. Others I had no idea where they were coming from or what they were trying to ask (note I am not American, so English is not my first language-although its not an excuse, my co-workers sometimes have to explain certain expressions to me).
