BEC Human Grading – Just a Myth?

I am still waiting on BEC score (OK 472). I asked my state board of accountancy if it’s true that if you don’t receive your BEC score in the first wave that your exam has gone to a human that grades the Written Communications. She said “no” and thought that was ridiculous.

So, is it true or not?

    AUD - 83 (11/28/11)
    REG - 70 (4/7/12), 84 (7/31/12)
    BEC - 75! (5/31/12)
    Ethics - 98

They told me that my score wasn't released in the first wave. There should be a second score release wave at some point between now and Friday.

I also asked the same question to someone @ my state board (TX) and he said that is not true. He said all it means is that your exam wasn't included in the batch that was released..

So I don't know what to think!?

Yeah, that's what the lady from my state board (OK) said. Are they graded in order of NTS? Because I know some people from OK with NTS' in the 480's that have their scores. Mine is 472 and I have nothing! I personally don't think that there is any rhyme or reason.

Thanks for sharing. That means that the OAB should have them up tomorrow. They usually lag 24 hours behind the NASBA release.

    Good Luck Posty,

Unfortunately I know mine is not included in those 1700 OR I guess it could be but they (state board) didn't receive it by the end of the business day today, so I'm looking to at LEAST Wednesday morning…………..

On their site it is stated that some BEC exams undergo “additional analysis.” I would guess that analysis is performed by a human?

    AUD- 80
    BEC- 70, 74, 80
    FAR- 72,75
    REG- 73,79 boooya!

Some do, but I do not think it's due to the score being borderline, I read somewhere that they do this to help ensure the machine is grading correctly. I'm not sure how they come up w/ the sample size.

    I COULD be wrong…

I readily believe the secondary level of analysis – I was in the second wave both times I took BEC and had a 70 and a 74…it does suck to have to wait but the consolation is that either you are close enough to pass or you did pass (sucks to be the former and not the latter – I know) 😉

    AUD - 89
    BEC - 83
    FAR - 81
    REG - 86
Finally done - many thanks to Jeff and A71!

    F - 5/8/13 81
    R - 74, 2/7/14 86
    B - 74, 12/6/13 82
    A - 70, 11/4/14 89!!!

I'm done 🙂 Many thanks to Jeff, A71 and Roger CPA!!!

I saw this on this AICPA's FAQs re: scoring

    6. How do you score the written communications responses?

Most responses are scored by a computer grading program, which is calibrated using human scorers. In some cases, responses are scored by a network of human graders (all CPAs). If your score is close to the passing score, your written responses will be automatically re-graded by human graders. When there is more than one grader for a response, the

average of the scores is used as the final grade.

I got two 74s & one 73 in BEC. The state from which I am taking the exam is non-appelable. I did all kinds of correspondences with NASBA & AICPA. One of my correspondences, I got the following response:

“Please be advised that whenever a candidate scores between 69-74 the AICPA automatically rescores the examination to ensure the accuracy before releasing the scores.”

Human grading may exist for the above range and I am 101% sure scores will not change in human grading or in the appeal process.

OH NO~!! So if that's the case and mine is held for human grading then I failed. =(

Not necessarily. There may be any number of reasons for delay in releasing the scores. Probably, you might have passed but the batch was not processed to release yet.
