BEC – Sentence Spacing

When I took typing class over 20 years ago, we were taught to double space in between sentences. I have been accustomed to that ever since. But as I researched around, I noticed single spacing is now popularly used even in Becker’s books. So double spacing is obsolete now? I guess I need to practice single spacing now since I am testing BEC soon.

I can't help it. I still have a hard time using single space after so many years of double spacing, but yes, single spacing is the norm now.

Thanks. I only figured it out just now. Incredible! I was not paying attention at all, LOL. I literally had to edit this post to ensure I am using single spaces in between my sentences.

I wouldn't stress about it. I don't think double spacing is obsolete. In fact I am 100% certain that I double spaced after every sentence on my BEC essays. I would worry more about grammar and how your sentences are written than I would about the spacing.

    Exactly!

That's why I am very much worried about my poor grammar and bad tenses. Having English as my second language is my drawback. I remember taking GMAT three years ago. My mind went blank while the clock kept ticking on me on business writing. I panicked at the last minute while highlighting what I already wrote and then accidentally hit space. Everything got erased. I flanked the test. I hope it won't happen with my BEC.

But I guess, (‘again' as Tim G. would sigh), I should worry more about my MCQs and BEC concepts. So I need to finish reading the book and start hitting the MCQs, LOL.

Double spacing is definitely not obsolete yet! At my firm, we're told you can use either as long as you remain consistent throughout. But I don't think it's something that's looked for in BEC.

The best news in all of this is that you don't need to ace the WC to pass BEC. If you do really well on your MCQ and moderately well on WC you can pass this thing. It is a completely different beast than the SIMS in the other 3 parts. I don't think you're grammar is bad at all. You may mix up some tenses here and there, as anyone speaking a second language would, but don't let that get your confidence down. Know your MCQ topics and know them well. Make sure you use a lot of key point terms in your writing so the computer can pick it up. It's only graded by a human if you're borderline, which you won't be because you'll do so great on the MCQ!

I have scored 100% on the Ninja BEC WC using double spaces. I don't know if that means the actual exam will be the same, I just did it out of habit.

Hopefully someone can chime in with a definitive answer.

Pretty sure I put two spaces after every sentence in my BEC sims. I can't get out of the habit and absolutely HATE the way single spacing looks on a page. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

For what it's worth, I double-spaced all of my sentences in my exam. The spacing thing actually didn't even cross my mind. I still passed. 🙂

I used double spacing on my BEC written portion and it didn't seem to affect my score. If spacing was an issue on the exam, the review courses would teach it, and the test would specifically state to use one space between sentences, just as they sometimes explicitly state to fill in 0's where needed on the sims. I did not and still would not worry about it.
