    Incorrect

    The answer is B. Comparable sales.

    “The use of comparable sales is not an income approach to valuation of a business, it is a market approach. Under the comparable sales approach, the value of a business is determined by comparing it to other entities with comparable characteristics for which the value is more readily determinable.”

    This was a tricky one

    Also, quick question for Becker users – can I skip B4 and come back to it at the end of everything, or does it help more to do everything in order? I'm falling a little behind schedule and B5 / B6 don't look so bad to catch up with.

    Does anybody actually practice the written composition? I'm comfortable with my writing abilities and what will be requested in terms of format for the exam. I'm just curious if anybody actually practices them intentionally.

    Hi everyone

    I am confused with the solution that Becker uses. It seems bit tedious. I eventually got the same answer of $5 as being the minimum but I donā€™t understand how they got the calculation for ā€œGross margin at split off?ā€

    The way I solved it was by adding selling price to sell without processing further ($3.5) with additional cost per unit of ($90,000/60,000) = $1.5 to get total of $5.. Can I also do it this way as it seems more simple way?

    Can anyone help me out.. I'm new to this site..

    Really appreciate it..

    Sincerely,

    Manny

    P.S. Sorry but I don't know how to copy and paste the problem to this forum without rewriting the entire problem and would be very time consuming.. I tried to print screen, but it wont allow me to copy to this site due to copyright issues I suppose.. Does anyone have an idea of how I can post a particular problem on there without violating copyright material?

    BEC to take July 2014

    FAR to take Oct 2014

    AUD to take Jan 2015

    REG to take April 9, 2015

    @manny Yeah, I think you can do it the way you calculated it. That's actually the way I calculated that particular problem too. When I looked at the solution, it seems like it's the same “methodology” just a different mechanism of getting to the answer. The joint costs aren't relevant to the situation because either way, they're going to be incurred. I think the gross margin at split off figure is their way of backing into the further processing cost amount.

    @peterman I have the same question. My study materials also don't really address the written portion at all. I am fairly confident in my writing ability, but can anyone give some guidance as to what the writing portion should look like and if it is worth taking the time to do the writing problems?

    Hello all. This is my first post, regarding my first test, BEC. As you can see in my sig, I have an extremely condensed schedule as I'm using Becker FastPass and spend the entirety of my day studying, which works for me.

    My studying has consisted of attending all 5 live lectures and completing the 6th, working the multiple choice questions following each lecture, watching each lecture online again, then working the questions again (one lecture/ chapter/ set of mcqs per day). I occasionally sprinkle in progress tests and plan to complete the practice exams before my first exam.

    The second time through my mcqs I've scored 85% or higher and tend to score that well on my progress tests. Is there anything more I should be doing? I mention my scores because I fear that I'm recognizing answers and not truly being tested, discrediting my results.

    Any feedback is welcome regarding my study plan, results, etc. I realize I'm butting in on this thread a bit but I figured it was some what relevant to share my study journey with you all!

    Thanks and happy studying!

    @cody

    I would strongly recommend getting the ninja notes and/or audio. I took FAR on 5/2 and AUD 5/28. I am a brand new tax accountant and had just finished my first tax season with 2 1/2ish weeks to cram before FAR and 4 weeks between FAR and AUD. As you can see from my signature, I did not quite make it, but I guarantee my scores would have been much lower had I not been listening to Jeff day in and day out on my commute (and also in those moments where I needed to study but one more MCQ would have thrown me over the edge)

    Good luck!

    @Ballerina

    Thanks for the suggestion, I'm definitely going to look into it. I don't start working at a CPA firm until November so I have all day and night to study, so the ‘portability' factor isn't too important for me. The more review resources, the better though, I imagine. Thanks!

    @Cody I started having the same issues just recognizing answers and not having the patience to deal with going through solutions. I have changed my tune just to make sure that I am understanding concepts and not just plowing through material. If it is a theory question I make sure to read the “why this is right and why the others are wrong” explanations. Sometimes I answer wrong intentionally just to read what it has to say about why it is wrong. For problems that require solutions I work through them just to make sure that I continue to understand what the solution really is and why even though I have seen the problem 10+ times.

    Why can't I have a spreadsheet program with just basic functionality on exam day? It would make life so much easier.

    @Peterman

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but you do in fact get a spreadsheet tool on the exam.

    Thanks for the link.

    Is the spreadsheet tool applicable for BEC? My review materials have only suggested the on screen calculator.

    I honestly don't know but my materials allow me to use the spreadsheet tool.

    @Cody M,

    I would recommend doing a few practice memos just to get the format down.

    Past that, it seems you're in good shape. The amount I get correct on the review progress tests has been pretty much exactly what my score ends up being on the actual exam. Tackle your weak areas.

    @Peterman25,

    I use the spreadsheet tool for a couple of things. I can set up a tabular variance analysis in 30-45 seconds and a NPV analysis in about a minute (something like https://i.imgur.com/0ggCziX.png) that really cuts down on both calculations and mistakes. I also use spreadsheets when there's a lot of information in a question and I need to jot it down somewhere.

    And to repeat my earlier question, can I do something like B1 -> B2 -> B3 -> B5 -> B4 -> B6 with Becker instead of going purely chronologically?

    I don't see the harm in it considering it's a completely standalone topic just as B6 is and they directly tell you that it can be done at any time. Of course, I haven't taken the test yet so don't count on my opinion.

    Anyone else taking the test at the beginning of July? How far are you through the material? I am using Becker and should have B5 done by tomorrow night or Sunday morning and I hope to finish B6 by next Tuesday or Wednesday so I can start reviewing. I'm starting to feel the stress.
