Hi everyone – I just started studying for BEC earlier this month and I'd like to share something that may help to reinforce what you are studying in BEC.

Remember, BEC is the exam that tests us on how the economy works and how businesses operate. It'the “Big Picture” and why we do FAR, AUD, and REG. BEC requires you to “step in the shoes” of the Owner/CEO/CFO/Upper Management of a business. The material, from what I can tell, is from no less than 7 college courses, including micro, macro, cost acct I & II, AIS, financial mkts, financial management, etc. They aren't just testing us on this material because they want to make our lives difficult.

The better you understand these topics, the easier it'll be when you're the CPA who's also the CFO of a Fortune 500 company!

If you don't have a job between 6am-11am, I recommend watching two business TV shows. CNBC's Squawk Box from 6am-9am (if you're awake), then Squawk on the Street (9am-11am). Squawk on the Street in particular, because it's the show that's on when the markets open at 9:30am.

These two shows live and breathe the topics in BEC. I'm in no way suggesting that you are going to learn enough from watching these programs that you don't have to read your BEC book, but I can bet that if you watch them, even for say 1hr per day, you will learn something that will help you to better understand the concepts that BEC tests you on.

The more you study for BEC and the more you watch these shows consistently you'll suddenly find yourself able to follow along with the topics the news anchors are discussing and realize how much information you really do know!

    Hi Everyone!

I'm scheduled for BEC 4/15 (what better day?!). It is my second go round testing for it, my third time scheduling it. I felt pretty prepared over the summer and had to reschedule due to a medical problem. Moved on to REG and passed it, then took BEC finally in January. I found studying the second time around difficult considering I find the material very boring. Every non “accounting” class that I loathed is tested in BEC. This is now my third time studying and I know I need to focus. Last time I barely studied because I thought I had relearned it all enough over the summer. I DEFINITELY know my weak spots…and find myself once again wanting to avoid them!

The one thing I can say is that there was ONE big difference that I can guarantee passed me through REG my first time out-the amount of MCQ that I did. I did REG MCQ everywhere I went on my ipad or phone. I mean EVERYWHERE. Any time I could sneak in 5 or 10 questions I did. When I could sit down for sessions I took notes on them etc, but even 5 or 10 teaches you something. With BEC I bought them and did a few hundred. I got a 73 vs 81 in REG.

Time to grow up and stop avoiding this boring as hell exam material-the only way I'll never have to look at it again is by passing!! So that's my main motivation.

I am using Roger study materials, but since I've covered his videos twice already am passing on watching most of them, but I will on my weaker points. I also used the Willey BEC book to supplement but I think that confused me more than anything. This time I am using the Ninja book (new), using Roger videos only on weak spots, Ninja notes (new), Ninja audio, and doing as many Ninja MCQ as I did in REG at least.

I lost my job so have a month to focus and get this baby passed before I head back into the workforce again (thanks to the support of a very understanding and helpful boyfriend).

    Let's get this thing passed!

    REG (11/14) 81 Pass
    BEC (01/15) 73
    (04/15) 80 Pass
    FAR (8/15) 73
    Rematch (10/15) 71 ugh
Third time is the charm! (2/16) 78
    AUD (11/15) 77 Pass

Hey guys! Back to the forum after a very long break. I'm scheduled to take BEC on 4/23 and just started with Ninja book today. Planning to finish the book by the end of this week and on to the MCQs. This is my third attempt, I passed the first one back in May 2013 and lost credit in Nov-14 due to not passing REG. My second attempt was in Q1-2015 which I failed with a 70 as I did not put in enough time reviewing the material. Hoping to finish this exam in this quarter. Good luck to all!

Hey, my exam day is April 3rd and I need to pass it. Took it twice and got a 73 first time, 74 second time. I added the Ninja MCQ this time . I did just Becker the other two times. My second exam had a lot of questions about ERM and the risk of implementing a cloud system. I only had a general idea because Becker has only a 1/4 of a page regarding this/

I really need to pass this exam to keep my motivation going. Passed REG the first time last August and have not been able to pass BEC :(.

When I walked out of both REG and BEC I knew if I didn't pass exactly what I had fallen short on (Luckily I passed REG). Jeff talks about that too, and I bet we all know what we avoided focusing on. It's amazing how I am a mother of two teenagers yet my mind can act like a child pouting in the corner and not want to study certain topics! Speaking of….back to my Ninja book

    REG (11/14) 81 Pass
    BEC (01/15) 73
    (04/15) 80 Pass

@ PamG – I feel the same way – there are certain topics that are so tough to review and I just don't get (like Variances and Cost Accounting). I know I just have to buckle down and study, but my mind doesn't want to 🙁

Anyone have any tips for studying those topics?

What I'm doing right now is as I read through the ninja book making notes of the stuff I KNOW that I need to go back and reread and “get”. Hoping that I'll compile a list and when I feel inspired or mentally prepared can tackle them one at a time.

Something that I found useful in school on hard concepts etc is explaining it someone else as best I can. You know you're not completely clueless on any of these topics, and when I would explain to someone else what I did know I'd usually have a bunch of epiphanies on what I struggle with and get the material myself.

    REG (11/14) 81 Pass
    BEC (01/15) 73
    (04/15) 80 Pass
    FAR (8/15) 73
    Rematch (10/15) 71 ugh

@bucky Hey, nice to see you! For both the topics, you need to focus on the formulas and you should be good. You just need to get used to the type of questions and applying the right formula. Hope this helps

A few days ago, I came up with a Variance mnemonic that is adult oriented and a little sloppy, but I think is somewhat memorable (and works for me).

Imagine a pearl (which is farmed by putting a ball into the oyster, which is covered in spit to become a pearl) that becomes a cue ball on a billiard table. You lean over with your pool cue (misspelled to que) and your opponent makes a joke/quip about your awesome A-grade posterior to get your focus away from making the shot (with extra S for how awesome it is).

    Taking the capitalized letters:

    Ball + Spit = PeaRL or BSPRL, where B = Budget, S = Spending, P = Price, R = Rate, L = Labor

    Pool QUE = PQUE, where P = Production, Q = Quantity, U = Usage, E = Efficiency.

    AAASSS QuiP =

    AA|AS|SS

QP|QP|QP where A is Actual, S is standard, Q is Quantity, P is price and you read it as grouped by the | (ie. AQAP)

BSPRL is linked to AQAP|AQSP and PQUE is linked to AQSP|SQSP.

Lets say the question asks the Efficiency variance, so you would solve for the difference between AQSP|SQSP (or Actual Quantity|Standard Price versus Standard Quantity|Standard Price).
