    Lauren…

I'm gonna give it a shot…efficiency variance is difference between actual labor and standard

    Standard hours= .5 hr/per widget * 10,000 widgets= 5,000 hours

    Actual= 3,000 hours

    $15 per hour= Standard rate

    $15 (5,000-3,000)

= $30,000 favorable since we used less hours than we planned

Parat College allocates support department costs to its individual schools using the step method. Information for May is as follows:

    Support Departments

    Maintenance Power

    Costs incurred $99,000 $54,000

    Services percentages provided to:

    Maintenance — 10%

    Power 20% —

    School of Education 30% 20%

    School of Technology 50% 70%

    100% 100%

What is the amount of May support department costs allocated to the School of Education?

    A.

    $40,500

    B.

    $42,120

    C. $46,100

    D.

    $49,125

Can anyone break this down? Step allocation…Even after reading the solution I am still confused. (The answer is C…)

Alright, so this is how I calculated the problem. With the step method you have to allocate costs between service depts first. Then you allocate to the schools. Look for the service dept that provides more services (maintenance). Allocate 20% of the 99,000 maintenance costs from maintenance to power (19,800). So new costs are as follows. Maintenance; 99,000-19,800=79,200 and power; 54,000+19,800=73,800. Finish allocating maintenance costs. Scool of education gets 29,700 of the maintenance costs ((3/8)*79,200) and school of tech gets 49,500 ((5/8)*79,200). Now, allocate the power costs. The key point to remember is that you cannot allocate costs back to maintenance from power because the problem would never end. Just allocate the power costs between the two schools. School of Educ gets 16,400 of the power costs ((2/9)*73,800) and school of tech gets 57,400 of the power costs ((7/9)*73,800). Check to make sure all of your costs add up in the end. School of Education gets 46,100 of the total costs (29,700 +16,400) and school of tech gets 106,900 of the total costs (49,500+57,400). 46,100+106,900=153,00 which is equal to yiur original costs.

What is the best way to study/practice the Written Communications? Should I spend much time practicing this section at all?

    Thanks

@YoungNC – no, you shouldn't. You need to know the basics and keywords, but it isn't worth spending much time practicing. My Becker instructor gave us a “formula” for writing. I think it worked well. Here is a link to this topic on another thread.

tell them what you're gonna tell them

tell them (use keywords and fluff)

tell them what you told them / follow up

Chapter 2 and 3 in Becker are so terrible. A little because of difficulty, but mostly because of the amount of MCQ. I would rather do anything else than spend 7-9 hours trying to get through 300 extremely tedious MCQs.

    FAR - 93 - 7/1/14
    AUD - 94 - 7/25/14
    REG - 92 - 8/30/14
    BEC - 89 - 10/6/14
