    NINJA Question –

    NINJA MCQ Question:

What is the best thing a personal computer (PC) user should do if a program takes longer than usual to load or execute?

    A. Test the system by running a different application program.

    B. Reboot the system.

    C. Run antivirus software.

    D. Back up the hard disk files to floppies.

Answer: C – Run antivirus software

The best approach to the described condition is to run antivirus software. A program taking longer than usual to load or execute is a symptom of a virus. Many viruses will spread and cause additional damage if many normal procedures are performed. Use of an appropriate antivirus program may identify and even eliminate a virus infection.

Testing the system by running a different application program can enable a virus to spread.

Rebooting the system can enable a virus to spread.

Backing up hard disk files to floppies can enable a virus to spread.

*I will preface this with that I have not read the IT topic outlines in my Gleim material.

I thought this was a trick question. I chose B, as the BEST thing I would do in practice, Reboot the system.

I’m an IT expert and I would not automatically assume I have a virus if my application is taking longer to load than usual and no where in this question does it hint at malicious intent. I would reboot my system if applications were slow in loading and see if that corrected the problem. I would need to have strong evidence that a virus might be in play before I scan the system for viruses, especially since the majority of business PCs are running some form of active antivirus software in the background.

So according to the AICPA, you should be running antivirus software every time your extra large Excel/Access files take a few extra minutes to load because you might have a virus, even though the user is taxing the system by multitasking and playing YouTube in the background on a 5-10 year old PC, which is what many businesses are running on today.

What?! It is most likely a memory issue and rebooting the system would eliminate the issue. I don't understand how a virus spreads with the computer off since it attaches to programs. I can see a worm possibly spreading, not a virus.

When I got to the question I thought it was wrong also, but I guess I can understand running the anti virus software.

The BEST answer should be “Call your IT help desk and report the issue” and then let them investigate/instruct the user on what to do. We are accountants, not IT support staff. Identifying the root causes of slow applications on a users workstation are not part of IT audits as far as I'm aware.

The only reason I can see “Run antivirus software” being the correct answer is that this is the CPA exam, and we've learned that we should be in a questioning mindset and trust no one. Better do a full system scan every chance you get! I do question why this is even a question on a CPA exam.

@Jeff – Even Macs are starting to get antivirus software! It's #4 in the app store for both paid and free apps this week!

Yes it is silly..It IS what the AICPA thinks is the best answer. Not what you think even though you are a trained professional. I had the exact same thoughts while reviewing the IT material and how dated it is.

I had a PC at home boot up ridiculously slow just the other day and nothing really worked right when it did finally finish booting. It isn't used for surfing the internet (even though it can) and it has no virus software running on it. Guess what fixed it – a reboot.

I could be mistaken, but from my recollection, most times you actually have to reboot the computer before you can even get the antivirus to run!

    I primarily use MAC now

Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

Actually the answer should have been.

    E. You need to close that YouTube app with Funny Cat Videos and go to Ninja MCQ's like you were supposed to in the first place.
