I looked through the first page of the BEC forum, and the first 3 pages of the BEC study group, in the past year of hanging around I haven’t seen a good conversation on the BEC writing questions.

I have gleaned that the traditional method is “know how to write a complete sentence, and drool slightly on the keyboard”

I’ve looked at a few sample questions on CPA excel, and i’m having a hard time answering them succinctly, but maybe that isn’t quite the point of the problem. I am a good writer, but haven’t come up with a good schema for answering these questions. What does one do if the topic is in total left field?

ETC ETC ETC, comments would be nice!

I really can't tell if I did well on the writing communication as I didn't get a score report. But you should try and use the standard format (intro, body, body, conclusion) Becker has a few writing samples you can look at if you have it.

There was one I got on a topic I didn't really know, I wrote an intro to pretty much restate what the question was asking, and a body writing whatever I could on the topic, I also wrote “My knowledge is somewhat limited on this topic but I will look into this further if you wish to meet” or something along those lines”. I only used 3 paragraphs for that.

Thank you for your time and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. (OR) Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to discussing this matter with you further.

Scarletknight, I think that's an excellent approach to the writing.

I reviewed quite a lot of different examples of writing when I was studying for the BEC exam. Many of the examples covered topics in a way that actually made me feel very inadequate (oh crap, I don't think I can write this well and cover it this in depth). When the actual test came, I found the three topics broad enough to allow a person to demonstrate their writing ability more so than needing to include every nitty gritty detail. My opinion based on the topics I saw was that the testers were more interested in seeing how well the applicant could construct a business memo. My approach was very similar to scarlet knight's.

I agree with Scarlett's approach as well. One thing you need to remember about the written communication is that it will only be graded by a human if you are on the pass/fail line after the computer grading. Computer grading notices things like spelling, grammar, and looks for key words so if you focus on writing well, even if your knowledge is a little limited the computer will notice that you've pinpointed key words relevant to the topic and that you didn't make a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. If you rock the MCQ it really doesn't matter how you do on the WC so I think your focus should be on learning the material so you can do well on the MCQ and so you have knowledge of material that could be in the WC in order to know those key words.

Do you have to put the signature? or is it implied?

I haven't been able to find a clear answer on this. Becker ends theirs with an ending line like “I would be happy to discuss this matter with you further” but they don't actually sign off with Sincerely, [given title]

The CPA excel ones all end with:

    Sincerely,

    Accountant (or other given title)”

I think Becker covers the writing really well. I think it all comes to your memory and writing skills. Just imagine you do actually write to a real person, you would of course say proper “hello” and proper “sincerely”. In terms to sign off or not, just sign, it will take you a second, but at least you will not have to think about such minor details. In my experience, the exam WC are pretty straightforward. I think its not going to be a question where you have no idea wth they are talking about, if you studied, you will be able to squeeze a relevant sentence, or two, or three.

    I ended up signing mine.

I have to admit the test went AWESOME! 90% certain I crushed it. This was the test that I felt the best going into, as well as out of. CPA Excel did an awesome job on BEC.

Related to BEC material. Don't get scared about the writing. I was nervous and I could've pasted the test if I left the whole thing blank.
