I am taking BEC in couple of days and I am really concerned about the WC portion of the exam. This is my second time taking this part (I received 73 with below comparable on WC) but I still have no clue what I am going to do. Becker is my only studying material as it has treated me well so far but I am clueless as to how to write this. English isn’t my first language which doesn’t help… I am getting to the point where I am thinking about just memorizing one example memo structure and fill in the middle type of strategy. Good idea or bad? Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated!

You're saying English is not your second language and you're worried about the written communication portion of this exam? Let me just say that your entire post is very well-written and very clear. I understand that “business communications” might be different but I have to say that your written English, as far as your post in concerned, is excellent. In fact, I would even say it is better than many who speak English as the first language.

It's possible the “below comparable” means you didn't get the concepts of what was being asked. Just keep your answer short and simple, stay on topic, and organize it so the memo flows (don't jump from idea to idea haphazardly). When you write the memo, make sure you only write what you know is correct because if you try to BS your way through it and write something that is completely incorrect, the grader will deduct point(s).

I remember when I took REG, I had two write a couple of memos. Each memo I wrote was maybe four or five sentences long (not including the “introduction” or “conclusion”). But I passed the test quite a while ago so maybe they changed the way that portion of the exam needs to be completed.

I agree, your written english is excellent. It only takes a few sentences to tell if someone has a good command of written word. I say it is a good idea to “memorize” a template and adapt it to each WC. Don't worry about whether or not you are accurate in regards to the material. If you don't know something, make it up but write it with conviction.

    Again, you write very well!

Pork Flavored Bacon, thanks for your complements! I should probably explain that better. I feel like my grammar is pretty solid but I just never know how to word things. I think I am trying too hard and making things too complicated even when I know I shouldn't. That's why I thought template strategy can work for me. other suggestions will be great although you guys are boosting my confidence! 😀

From what I can tell, your writing seems fine. 🙂 I would just focus on keeping it simple and well organized. Stick to using 3 paragraphs (intro, body, conclusion), maybe 4 paragraphs if the answer would be organized better that way. Make sure to use the keywords from the info they give you… You can even repeat some of the phrasing that they use, which makes it easier.

I used Becker as well and I honestly didn't practice any WC's and just figured I would wing it on test day. I got lucky and knew two of the topics very well from studying, which made them easy to write about. For the third topic, I did some mad bs'ing and keyword repetition. I don't know how I scored on them, but it was apparently good enough! I would focus more on studying all the BEC topics themselves, personally 🙂 Good luck on your test!!
