I am currently working on A3 chapter [was zoning out during lectures and hoping to find a more efficient way to study].

What is the best approach to the Becker self-study materials?

For A1 and A2 I went straight into the lectures, then reviewed the sections right before diving into the HW. My first attempt at the HW was usually pretty bad (50-70%), but I continue doing the HW questions until I get them 100%. For A3 I attempted reading the chapter BEFORE the lectures. I feel reading it before the lectures helped me to understand the material a little bit better without the distracting highlights and underlines, but it took a long time and now the lectures just seem to be a waste of time.

What did you guys find was the most efficient and effective way to do these chapters?

Also, how many questions should I be doing in the weekly progress tests?

Also, I purchased the Becker Final Review. There is no information on how long I should a lot myself to finish this separate book in addition to re-doing all lectures, HW and sims from the main review book. Advice?

Help! I am a full time student and I need to schedule out my studying between CPA and classes.

**Forgot to mention that I’m taking the exam 11/26!

I'm right there with ya. I'll be taking audit on 11/22.

I've pretty much stuck to the first strategy you wrote about. I go through the lecture, highlighting and whatnot. Then I got through each part of the chapter separately, rereading and making index cards of most of the highlighted info. I do the questions for each individual section after that. Then move on the to next. Not going to lie, this takes a while but it has been working for me. I just go through the questions once, no matter how badly I do. I don't want to start memorizing them so it becomes pointless. I also leave the optional questions until my review period at the end so I have some questions I haven't seen before. During that review period I basically repeat going over each chapter and redo the questions I got wrong the first time then the optional questions. At that point it has become much easier. Sometimes I answer questions that I felt were so easy that I couldn't believe I got them wrong the first time. It just gets hard to retain all of this info especially the first time you go through.

I like to watch the lecture then do the multiple choice questions that corresponds with the section I just watched. I find that it really helps to reinforce what I just watched in the lecture and it helps to break up watching the lectures since they are so boring. I start zoning after about an hour bc it's so boring so this helps me to stay more focused.

@ibacCPA I never considered leaving the ones I got wrong for during the review period, because you are right- when I re-do them right away I answer them correctly mostly because I remember what the answer should be. You make the notecards yourself? I bought the ones from Becker, but haven't given them much review yet. Do you write out your own notes at all?

Yeah I quickly learned simply redoing the questions right away really doesn't help you. If you get a 50-60% on one of the bigger sections, it's not a big deal as long as you feel like you get the information a bit. I tend to really nail down that information in the review period. Much of the Becker stuff ties together throughout the entire book. So information that you don't understand as you study A1 may make more sense when you go through it during review after you've seen everything in the book. It's kind of a pain but it's one of the things I've learned with these books.

I have the Becker cards too. I don't write my own notes during the lectures. I pretty much treat my own written index cards as my notes. When I'm reading through the chapter after the lecture I have the Becker cards right there with me. I normally end up rewriting those cards on my own. My cards end up being a little more detailed and I make some for topics not covered on the Becker cards. Those cards are good tools to reinforce what information is most important (at least what Becker thinks is most important). Definitely a good way to keep the flow going as you're reading through this rough, boring material.
