Hi all I’m working Becker BEC passmaster questions and I came across a question regarding the terminology “Programmed Edit Checks”. Now before I start I’m not going to kill myself on this particular topic because although its important, it does not hold as much weight as other chapters. Nevertheless, I came across a question that I cannot trace back to the text book. When I get a question wrong, I like to refer back to the text to see what I missed but I cannot find the topic Progammed Edit Checks in the textbook. Has anyone come across this problem?

An employee mistakenly enters April 31 in the date field. Which of the following programmed edit checks offers the best solution for detecting this error?

    a.

    Online prompting.

    b.

    Reasonableness.

    c.

    Preformatted screen.

    d.

    Mathematical accuracy.

    Explanation

Choice “b” is correct. The only programmed edit checks in the choices are reasonableness checks and edits for mathematically accuracy. Obviously, April does not have 31 days. A check on this kind of data entry would be easy to implement and is standard.

Choice “a” is incorrect. Online prompting is not really a programmed edit check. Online prompting might assist in accurate data entry, however. Anything that makes data entry easier will help accuracy.

Choice “d” is incorrect. A test for mathematical accuracy is a programmed edit check. However, there are no mathematics in a date such as April 31.

Choice “c” is incorrect. A preformatted screen is not really a programmed edit check. A preformatted screen might assist in accurate data entry, however. Anything that makes data entry easier will help accuracy.

highlightnumb – this is really a process of elimination in mind.

Online prompting – I think of something persuading me to do something

Preformatted screen – huh? has nothing to do with anything

Mathematical accuracy – does something add correctly?

Reasonableness – can this be possible?

Process of elimination in my mind leaves only reasonableness. There is no April 31, April is a 30 day month. A reasonable test would catch this. A reasonable test would also catch if someone said they were 140 years old, things like that.

There are a LOT of these kinds of questions on the CPA exam – if you get one like this, you're lucky!

    A - 75
    B - 78 God is good.
    F - 77 Answered prayers.
    R - 84! Done!!

Paperwork sent - waiting for license!!
Still on a cloud and in shock. Through God, all things will happen.

When you get these weird IT questions, try not to get stuck on the random term itself. It can throw you off if you hyperfocus on not knowing it. They will try to throw you off, and much of it might not even be in your review materials, since IT is such a big area. Don't panic. Just read everything in the problem and the possible solutions, and think through it logically like Determined did above.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)
