So I just started to study a week ago for FaR and am so lost already.

I’m using Becker, could anyone tell me how they studied with Becker? I did the lecture first then MC questions(missed them all). I felt like I didn’t know what they were asking and I’ve been a fianical controller for 2 years. So now I’m thinking I need to read the material first….help

Don't expect to do well on your first time through for the MC. Just make sure you read the explanations as to why you got it wrong and understand it before you move on. It will come to you. Lectures are nice to get a general sense of what to focus on but the majority of the learning for most people will come through doing MC.

Olintojr. Would you suggest even reading the chapters? All the circling, underlining, etc throws me off.

Why would you not read the material? It's the main reason to buy Becker.

I used Becker…I watched the videos without highlighting, then I highlighted/circled. etc. by looking at the online book and copying them into my Becker book, then I did the multiple choice.

Nicolel I actually like that flow. I may try that instead of what I'm doing. I watched the lecture and did all the writing and highlighting my first round, so at the end I was really confused. Thanks

Depends on your situation. I am a slow reader so it would take me too long to get through the whole book. It comes to a point where dragging the studying out works against you. I was better off cramming more and doing more MC. If you are an efficient reader then go for it.

    1. Hold the book + a highlighter + a blue pen
    2. take notes while watching lecture and try to pay attention
    3. DO ONE SUBTOPIC AT A TIME. The instructors say it all the time in their lectures, so listen to them and do one subtopic and immediately review it and do its MCQs
    4. repeat for all subtopics

If you're scoring 50 or 60, that's ok. But if you're scoring 40 or 30, that's pretty bad and you need to review more before attempting to do MCQ.

Here is what I learned worked best for me:

    1. watch the video
    2. do the homework (after each section – I did not watch the entire 3-4 hours at one shot)
    3. then went back through the chapter (after completing all videos) and wrote my own notes from the highlighted/circled items from the book
    4. redid the homework questions

If I kept getting something wrong, I would go back and check my notes and reread that section to see what i was missing.

I also learned that for me it was better to break out study sessions in smaller blocks, rather than long 4-6 hour study sessions. I made it a habit to spent an hour before work, an hour during lunch, an hour here and there at work when I wasn't busy, 2 hours after work and 4 hours min on Saturday & Sunday.

    my 2 cents:

    1. reading the book is a must. I thought of lectures as a high-level introduction, and reading the books, note taking and MCQs as an actual study time.

    2. try NOT to break one topic into multiple study sessions. For instance, when covering bonds, finish listening to the lecture uninterrupted (besides pausing and taking notes if you're doing that). Next study session review the whole book and do more note taking/highlighting. Then do MCQs and SIMs. This way all the material in that particular subtopic stays connected in your brain and you don't end up with several pieces of a puzzle that just don't connect into one picture. Watching half a lecture or reading through only half the book per study session on a particular topic usually didn't let me see the big picture.

I read first. The videos I feel like helps me review and highlight the main points of what I just read, I like doing one subtopic at a time also. If I read one full chapter at once, or watch it all at once I stop paying attention and my mind starts to wander.
