This might be a little early for me as I am interviewing for internships at 2 of the Big 4 (PwC and DT) this week in Tax, but I am curious about what fields of Tax are the most lucrative, flexible down the line, growing etc…..I read a lot about M&A and International tax, but I don’t know much about other specialities.

Anyone care to chime in? I am in SoCal if that helps or if anyone can touch on the type of work that is covered. It seems the companies are pretty flexible with trying things out.

I've heard international is a really great field. We had an international speaker at accounting society once. His hourly billing rate was like $1200. I have always thought estate planning would be really fun and interesting. Not sure how lucrative, but I believe there are a lot of retirees in Cali, too.

    Florida CPA!
    Took final exam 2/25/15.
    Sent in Application 3/12/15.

Used CPA Excel solely for all exams.

The most lucrative in tax? A tax attorney.

The most lucrative in tax accounting? Probably M&A, transfer pricing, or PE/hedge fund taxation.

Generally speaking, you'll be passed around like a peace pipe for the first year or two within Big 4 tax, then settle into one of the more specialized lines of service listed. Whether or not you get to pick at that point probably depends on your firm, you partners, and how much the firm wants to keep you happy (i.e. if your worth keeping around, or not).

I can't speak as to the exit opps for tax, but I do see a lot of very well paying jobs for PE/hedge fund tax guys, but you could find yourself competing with JD/CPAs for those jobs.
