I am scheduled for a phone interview, and I am kind of nervous about it. It is for a senior associate position, I really want to gain that exposure and experience at a big 4 in NYC. My questions are:

    How should I present myself?

What questions should I ask the recruiter?

Anything else that I should know?

Also, I just recently took the FAR section and failed by 6 points. Should I even mention that I took the section.

Any thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated.

It is probably going to be pretty hard avoiding telling them that you have taken and failed one of the exams, but I wouldn't bring it up. As soon as they know you are eligible, they are inclined to ask if you have taken any exams, and once they have found out you have taken one they will want to know how it went. It is hard to avoid … from my experience anyway.

I have found that interviewers have good responses to questions that show you are interested in adding value to their operations. Because you are experienced, definitely have some accomplishments in your pocket, i.e., I supervised 3 employees last busy season and we accomplished X or I did XYZ for a client with revenues exceeding X amount of dollars.

Make a short list what is important to you in an employer. For example, do you want to work for someone who will challenge your limits, do you want to work for a visionary company or partner (might help if you know the lead in the department you are interviewing for), do you want exposure to diverse clients?. Cater your questions to find out if this firm will make you happy and also to show the interviewer a higher level of thought process. Your interest in working there should become transparent by the way you engage the interviewer for information about their company, as well as by your knowledge of the company.

You should learn about your recruiter and ask related questions during your interview. If you show that you have done your ‘homework’ this should be a plus. Then, you should present yourself the best way. It is not just about what you say, but also about how you say it. I could never imagine how many tricks are there to make your application a success, until I found a number of curious online sources – https://www.themuse.com/advice/43-resume-tips-that-will-help-you-get-hired, https://craftresumes.com/ etc. Good luck!
