What’s up with all the Black Friday madness? I have been aware of it for a couple of years now and finally decided to buy a couple of things this time. I’m not sure if these deals are actually any good or they just have sales on outdated stuff. Pardon my ignorance since I don’t live in the states and my only exposure to Black Friday is through the online media.

So let me know what you guys think and do you participate in Black Friday deals or not?

Its been my experience that the Cyber Monday deals are better deals by far and no crowds. I'll be online bright and early Monday.

@mla I thought Cyber Monday is mostly for electronics and Black Friday covered a broader market (clothes, gym equipment, study materials, etc.)

I think that may have been the intention originally but now its apples to apples IMHO. Last year I got a great deal on bear paw boots for my daughter on cyber Monday.

I went out a couple of times (many years ago) while it was still dark and got in line for hours to fight for the limited quantity on items that I bought as Christmas presents. Now I search the cyber Monday deals and sit in my pajamas and buy stuff in the comfort of my own home. There are tons of good deals to be had either way, but considering that I only buy for my employees, my boss, and my kids I don't have to get enough presents to make it worth the hassle. If I had a large extended family to buy for, that would be another story entirely.

There are some deals that actually are very good. You just have to know what you want before you go out.

My wife and I went to the mall last night after Thanksgiving festivities. Not too crowded and Macy's had fantastic deals on professional clothing. $18 designer wrinkle-free fitted dress shirts that actually do sell for $50+ during regular hours. My wife also got her mom a very nice winter jacket for a legitimate 50% off. We look up prices for things weeks in advance and then compare on Black Friday. Some stores often just jack up the “original price” so they really aren't selling it much cheaper even though they are advertising huge savings.

I've gotten some good stuff online with the Black Friday sales, but haven't ever gone to the on-site madness. Part of the reason for that, though, is that I live in the middle of nowhere, so the only stores I can go to at all nearby are Walmart, JCPenney, and a couple others – to get things like Macy's or Toys R Us or most any other store, I'd have to drive about 2 hours to get there, and that's just not worth it. Couple that with the fact that most of my Christmas gifts are shipped rather than hand-delivered, and online shopping makes much more sense!

That being said, I didn't see much that I liked this year – a little bit disappointed. I guess that my tastes didn't align with the tastes of the masses this year. *shrug*

I went to bestbuy today, I drove by on wed and there were tents outside. Today there was a police cruiser. I purchased the Lego Movie on Blu ray for $4 and a printer/copier/scanner for 50. Prices were cheaper than amazon so I felt I got a good deal. It was better than I thought, could find a parking spot and the check out line was like 10 minutes

sounds like most of you guys have had a good experience and online shopping is the way to go. I just bought my sister a couple of designer handbags and make-up stuff (20% off) and I bought some gym apparel for my brother (30% off). I think it was a good deal but I'll wait until they actually receive their gifts and let me know how they like it. I want to buy a couple of video games for PS4 for myself but I think I'll wait for cyber Monday and see if I like anything then.
