Book Questions

    I’ve spent the vast majority of my CPA exam study time doing online MCQ and TBSs, but often times I wonder if I should deviate from the computer by doing some questions from the book provided by my Review Course (Roger). Granted the book is outdated by now and still has some 2012 tax law thrown in; despite the fact that I’ve purchased the course in July 2013.

    If anyone else has purchased a CPA Review course… do you continue tackling the questions from the book anymore? Do you primarily use the software? Both? Neither? Explain.

    I use both– sometimes I process better with a book, and it's also nice to have something that I can take with me that doesn't require any internet or anything. And sometimes I get tired of doing the pencil and paper method and just want to click boxes. I use Wiley for both, and for the most part I get different questions in each format. It's nice for me to have a choice of medium.

    FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

    I agree. Since most instructors Ive seen suggest you do the book questions 1 – 2 times over, do you find yourself sticking to that regiment?

    No, I just go through the book questions once generally. Even with WTB I tend to just do them once, since I find that I am still drawn toward the same wrong answer, thereby reinforcing incorrect information.

    @Kimboroni

    Thanks for posting your scores and how you obtained them, it is very helpful for people like me to get an idea how people got where they are at!

    A friend of a friend of mine gave me some Becker stuff (digital version). I guess its the four books and then literally a thousand questions for each book (subject). I guess she was able to give the stuff to a couple people and I was lucky enough to one of them.

    All I have is the digital copies. Is that sort of what the Wiley sytem is all about,,,,, read the books do tons a practice questions?

    Yep, that's what I have for Wileybooks and questions. Going through the practice questions is really important, as it gives you an idea of what kinds of things they might ask, and you get to see where you tend to go wrong in reading/answering them, so hopefully you can work out most of the kinks by exam day.

    @Kimboroni,

    Thanks for the response. I have one more question for you.

    In order to obtain the CPA certification we must pass the four tests, meet the education requirement, and have one year experience working for a CPA. Apparently there is a time requirement which confuses me greatly.

    How long do I have to meet the one year work experience after I complete the tests?

    I ask this because I have a non-business BA and went back to school. I have 30 credits in accounting now (Certificate). I am have a hard time finding an accountant job. I am taking the exam before any work experience in the field.

    I don't want to run out of time after completing the test to fulfill the time requirement.

    Jerome, that varies by state. I'm in Oregon, and I have 7 or 8 years to get the 3 areas done (education, exam, and experience). I keep looking up if it's 7 or 8, and then I forget again.

    But I think there are a lot of states where it doesn't matter– anytime is fine. So you'd need to find out from your state board of accountancy what the timing requirement is.

    I did use a few YouTube lecture videos for AUD, but then I realized that some of the info was outdated.

    No lecture videos for FAR or REG, but I did use Ninja Audio for those. I listen to it while I'm driving– I find them very helpful.

    I have a degree in Linguistics and Anthropology, but I just finished my post-bac accounting certificate program in June. I had been working on it for 7 years.

    Are you working in the accounting field already?

    I have a ton of questions for you, as I have little to no experience working in accounting, and am just trying to enter the field.

    BA in Liberal Arts, just completed an accounting certificate. It appears that without the accounting BA most doors are shut. That is why study for this test. I'm too old to spend tons of money on another BA.

    FYI,

    I just moved from Oregon to Los Angeles till I decide where to relocate for good. I lived in Canby and West Linn for a while. Who knows, I may actually move back there too.

    My BA is from Portland State.

    Mine is from Portland State as well!

    I do work in accounting, sort of. I work as an administrative assistant at a CPA firm, so I am familiar with tax deadlines and basic tax forms, etc. from that. I'm taking on some other work more in the accounting arena, but I don't think it qualifies for the experience based on Oregon's requirements. I'll have to keep working on that. People at my firm are looking out for me, so that helps a lot.

    Sounds like you have a solid foot in the door there or somewhere else. That's great.
