Boss can't pass CPA exam?

Anyone ever reported to someone where you passed and they couldn’t? I have. When interviewing for other jobs they were surprised and had asked if my current supervisor was a CPA and replied no-this was when I was interviewing while sitting for the exams and had mentioned it and mentioned I had wanted to report to a CPA (later figured that our CPA controller could just sign off on the experience). My question is just about if anyone had experienced any type of tension or awkwardness as I have with regards to passing and your manager not.

I wouldn't assume that they “couldn't pass.” For some, it's not necessary, so they don't make it a priority. I interviewed with a CFO that wasn't licensed and he flat out told me he didn't see the value in it. He was very happy in his career and from his perspective it was a waste of time.

Yep I was trolling back since you didn't provide any valid response as to the subject of discussion which was related to experiences of tension between a subordinate passing while a manager couldn't.

@AICPAs Beach Thank you for your response. In my experience it was that they took the exam multiple times and couldn't pass one or more sections before other started dropping off, so they did very much want the designation. After some having going at it for years and spending thousands of dollars in exam fees and review course I would think it was important to them. Some people just never pass it. I had brought up to my dad how there was no retake limit and how many times some people had to retake sections and he was like “whoa I wouldn't want them to be my CPA” lol, In theory (to “protect the public” the purpose as to why the exam is administered) it would make sense that there be a limit as to number of failures, wouldn't you think? Not to offend anyone here of course.

EDIT: My former CFO was not licensed and when he found out I had been sitting he had replied with “that's great it is something you NEED to do”.

Just because someone failed the exam multiple times I don't think that's a direct indication that they wouldn't be a good CPA/good at their job. The reasons why people fail this exam are vast and I think it's awesome if someone continues to fail at this and have the courage to continue. Considering the expense, time, and mental toll it requires. Yes, it's great to pass all the first time around but many people do not.

I knew an audit senior manager who failed audit like 4 times. But he was good at his job. So who knows.

I still think you're making a hard assumption. Maybe they were a little apathetic in the first place, and then once they were promoted to a supervisory role it didn't matter to them anymore. I truly believe anyone can pass these exams if they are dedicated and put in the time. It's not like the material is impossible to master.

That is true and I commend all who keep trying, but according to the AICPA the exam is administered to “protect the public” and you need a 75 to do that. It is just interesting that they don't impose a failure limit “to protect the public” as well. Good thing for me as I had a freak accident on one and didn't get through all the material on my other fail.

@AICPAs Beach the manager I had worked for had been manager for several years. She hadn't even been considered for the controller position when they had left the company due to lacking the CPA credential. My current manager even agreed from her experiences the highest you can get is accounting manager without a CPA license as most controller positions require a CPA before even being considered. I know there are many Controllers and CFOs without a CPA, but it seems more common now than not. Our previous CFO was not. Current CFO is a CPA and CMA lol

EDIT: Our current controller was telling me how people have to drop out of public because they “can't pass the exam” and get promoted.

Then they simply didn't want it bad enough. I think that's the only difference between those that pass and those that don't.

I do agree there. My other issue then is if the AICPA said you need to pass this exam in order to “protect the public”, then they are flat out saying you won't protect the public at a job if you can't pass this exam. While I agree that you can be a superb accountant and not pass the exam for whatever reason, this is not the attitude of the AICPA/75 score. Again, besides getting our money, how can they let unlimited fails and still think the candidates can protect the public if they place so much faith in the exam to protect the public and the candidate took 10 attempts?

Passing the CPA exam doesn't make anyone special.

As a matter of fact, majority of successful business owners and directors are not CPAs.

Just a word of caution, don't let the CPA designation get into your head, the real measure of success is your personality.

Lots of threads has started off like this and didn't stand the test of time.

I highly doubt your scores though, you've not been doing simulations on the exams but you ended up passing? That's a real threat to the public interest.
