I always take note of how CPAs are portrayed on TV and in movies. They are usually portrayed as very intelligent, but also boring, predictable and nerdy with no life outside of accounting. I actually have observed a lot of this in real life as well in my 7 years plus in public accounting. Many of the senior level people I work with, and many of the people I have observed at conferences, etc. seem to actually fit that mold very well. I know what I am saying sounds like an insult to such individuals, but that is not where I am going with this. I actually feel like these individuals are the “real” accountants, while I am an imposter of sorts.

I am not in love with accounting and don’t enjoy talking about accounting outside of work. I also have so many interests and likes that are very non-accountant like. I like weight training and conditioning, MMA (watching it), heavy metal and old school rap, juvenile humor (like Friday, Borat and Jack-Ass type movies), etc. I fear that I will never feel like a “real” CPA because I am just not built like one.

Any other non-traditional accountants out there? What makes you different and do you ever feel it makes you less of a “real” accountant?

My boss(CPA for long time) is a photographer on the side. And a good one too. I don't think that is too typical. My goal when I am done with the exams is to get a hobby, any hobby to be more “diverse” lol

This will put me in a very public spot here. But, whatever… I used to model and competed in six beauty pageants (winning 3) and traveled the world with them. I've hosted many international beauty events and trained a few Misses out there.

I am also a brown belt in Isshyn-Ryu Karate Do. Just two belts away to get the black one and my father is in the hall of fame with the Sports Medicine Award in the same style.

Aaaaaand as soon I finish my CPA exams I've always wanted to take a culinary program or something to learn international ways of cooking. I also want to pursue a law degree just because I am fascinated by it, not to practice law.

Rome was not made in one day and certainly these are things/experiences to enjoy at a certain point in life and treasure them for the rest of it. So one day at a time and I will finish each and every challenge I have set for myself.

So not all accountants have to be boring, at least I don't think my life has been boring so far.

I work out a lot and am pretty jacked lol Gf confirms…loves the gun show! (Named them Debit and Credit ;))

I ride a crotch rocket…thinking about selling….scares the shit out of me sometimes.

I too like childish comedy.

I used to play Halo 2, MW2/3…but have slowly stopped…accounting is to blame

Everyone in my accounting classes at school were stereotypical “schoolers”…never really saw too many at the bars on W/TH/F nights and when I did they were usually socially awkward haha

I wouldn't consider Accounting “fun” but I will admit I love the adrenaline on my way/during/after taking an exam haha

More or less accounting offers a challenge to me that I enjoy taking on.

Every time I meet people at the gym, public places and we discuss what we do they always give me an odd look when i say what I do, so I def agree with the perception people have of accountants.

I do have some junk in the trunk too! Love disturbing the peace! used to have two 12's but now only one…but its more powerful 🙂

Da Bears- That's good to know. I feel like maybe I pursued the wrong career sometimes. It seems like they go home and study market trends and contemplate new accounting pronouncements, meanwhile I am in my garage gym pushing plates and listening to some old-school DMX. Of course I do study for the exams, but that's not the same as freely choosing to spend ones time researching, etc. out of a natural passion/curiousity.

Thank you SIMSLAYER… Yes I try to keep my life as interesting as possible… Although I have to admit; it has been on hold for the past year pursuing the CPA. Which I don't mind; but I am TIRED of studying. Grrrrrrrrr

I remember when I was dating my now husband; one of his friends always warned him to nice to me, because I could kick his a$$!!! Which I now I can, boys have a certain super weak spot that we girls don't have, and no karate needed. Ji ji ji… 😉 God was fair when providing the balance of power between boys and girls. I truly enjoy when I tell people I'm an accountant (from now on I will say CPA) and they look at me unbelievingly and say “you don't look like an accountant”. Makes me smile everytime. I strive to break the stereotype of stuffy, unattractive, boring, etc…

Well just for fun I will wake up at night and read some FASBs…..just kidding.

I love funny movies Borat, Friday, Money Talks, Mr. Bean and others.

In my office I give everybody a nickname, example:Call Girl (always on the phone), Cover Girl (lots of Tattoos), Pretty Brother (always looking in the mirror).

I used to run 400M & 800M competively. Now I just run some early morning milage to start the day.

I love to read books (not accounting ones though) and loves to cook.

Play with my RCs (cars, helicopter, trains etc).

I am told a lot that I should be a comedian

So one day I will go into business for myself and the sign will read “Comedian CPA” one way or the other clients should be happy.
