Burn your books!?

Has anyone actually burned or destroyed their study material after passing the exam, or does anyone plan on actually doing it? Occasionally I’ll see someone mention it and I just can’t imagine doing it, personally. It would feel so wrong to destroy something I spent so much time and effort with, regardless of the fact that they pretty much represent a 16-month pause on life. Maybe I’m just a nostalgic person, but I think it will be fun to flip back through these texts in 20+ years and have a look at all the highlight and notes in the margins.

So if you’ve destroyed your texts, how’d you do it and how’d it make you feel?

I have 23 legal pads of notes and I had considered burning them as a bit of celebration. I don't know though. If one of my children should follow in my footsteps I could use them as my “uphill in the snow both ways” story when they are studying.

I have to admit, flipping through my CPA review books 20 years from now is not my idea of fun. If I still have these five years from now, I'm going to say, “Why do I have this? It's 5 years out of date.”

My notes are going into the recycling just as soon as I have the license in my hand. My textbooks I'll probably keep for a year or two, in case I want to reference something, then I'll recycle those too.

I won't really think twice about it. I have no emotional connection to this stuff. I am neither angry at my textbooks nor fond of them. They are just books that I don't technically have the legal right to resell and that will soon be useless to me. I don't let stuff like that take up space.

If I ever pass this thing, I will most definitely have a huge bon fire party to celebrate and drink! This Fall would have been the perfect time, but unfortunately I screwed up and that will not be happening -_-

Read the user agreement, you are required to not only keep your books, but cherish them; while storing on a bookshelf is acceptable, some sort of shrine is recommended.

    this is an interesting post.

I have thought of burning my CPA study materials during my preparation. But one thing I realized is that once I was done with all exams, then all my stress, frustration, and anger were flushed away.

So as usual, those CPA materials are kept in my bookshelves where all my undergrad, grad, and other hobby/study books are located. – collection of my study books which I will show to my kids as they grow.

    Currently:
    CPA - Class of 2013
    ALMI (Associate, Life Management Institute)
CISA - Passed in 2011, Certified in 2014

    In Progress:
ASA (Associate of Society of Actuaries) - EXAM P (O), EXAM FM (O), EXAM MFE (X), EXAM MLC (X), EXAM C (X)

I took Audit three times. It was my first, somewhere in the middle, and last test. So yeah, the night I found out that I passed it, I burned the hell out of the book, three full spiral notebooks, hand-written posters, and flashcards.

Champagne by the fire-pit, watching those materials go up in smoke, made for such a great night! I do not regret it at all.

My boyfriend and I CAN'T WAIT until I find out I passed my final section of this awful exam!! The fire pit has been calling my books since last year! I have it all packed up in a box ready to go…..I intend to never open that box again, but simply heave the whole thing onto the fire and watch it burn. I like the shooting idea too. Perhaps my 9mm can contribute to the party before the fire!! 🙂

PS~ Is it August 4th yet!?!?!

I fully intend on torching 3 of the 4 study books as well as all my notes. I was going to do it last summer and we never got a fire pit set up (we had recently moved into our house).

The 4th book is coming to the range with me. That will be a fun target.
