Buying Becker before NTS

    Hi,

I have just joined this forum today. I have a question, unfortunately due to some financial hardships, I graduated but was unable to get my transcripts due to a remaining balance on my account. I resolved that today, but to get my transcripts sent I will have to wait another month and half.

I live in NY, and was told my NASBA that it takes 2-6 weeks to review transcripts, so assuming the worst case and they get back to me beginning of July, would it be a smart idea to buy Becker review course and start studying for FAR now? I am assuming an August or October test day.

    Thanks

I would say wait until they receive your transcript. The Becker subscription will expire in 18 months, so you want to buy it and use it right away. You may be able to squeak into the end of August, but waiting until June to make the purchase will still allow you plenty of time to study.

Plus, the first 10 days of September are open to take the exam for the new changes, so I believe that you have a good chance of testing Q3.

The earlier you start studying the earlier you pass, so don't delay.

Also, there are cheaper options than Becker. Gleim sections can be purchased individually (about $325 each) and are good for 18 months each, most programs sell individual sections.

Also, you can probably purchase used books to review for a fraction of the price.

It took me 6 weeks for me to get approved to take the CPA exam.
They couldn't find the transcript that I sent them the first time, so I had to send them my transcript again.

I could have started studying 6 weeks earlier, but I decided to wait until after getting approved first before I purchased my review course.

Since you have 6 weeks to study, but you don't have your $1,500-$3,500 CPA review course yet, I recommend getting the Ninja Multiple Choice Questions for only $47 (for 3 month access).

This will give you a 6 week head start before you get your approval.

I think you should start studying as well, but Becker is a big investment. I wouldn't purchase Becker until everything is cleared with the state board (even then I may go a different route). Maybe buy just the Becker book or buy some NINJA products that are much less expensive until everything is cleared with the state.

I am in NY and my application took from the beginning of May until the end of July. Why? Missing transcripts. Actually it was just one missing mark that one of my professors forgot to enter. If there is anything missing from your application, it will go into a polar vortex only to surface several months later. The only good thing about being in NY is that you can schedule a Prometrics exam with very little notice.

I would not bother getting the discount with Becker for buying all four courses at once. Just buy one and see if you like their approach. So many people run out of time and they seem to not allow extensions. But yes, you should start studying.

I agree with them. Becker is a huge investment to make before being cleared by your state. I suggest to buy Ninja Notes or MCQ first and start studying. Together they are just a little more than $100. I would definitely not wait to study. It would definitely be a waste of time. I would purchase all 4 at the same time to get the discount for Becker but have the books shipped to you one part at a time as you begin studying for them. Best of luck!
