Bye Bye, Day Job

Yep, that’s right, I quit my job. I’ll still be there until the end of the month though. It looks like that bookkeeping business I’ve been talking about will be fired up even sooner than I had initially planned. That’s okay.

I’m just not cut out for sitting in a cage (cubicle) all day and doing as I’m told. Admittedly, I’m not the best with authority or too much structure. I like to do things my way, and I don’t want my creativity stifled. Also, I’m not one to just bend over and take it (lube or no lube) when someone tries to give me the shaft–a quality isn’t appreciated by my employer.

Anyway, I’ve got some basic business cards printed up and I put up a very basic placeholder web page that contains my contact info. I’m still researching how to run a successful bookkeeping business and designing my site and other marketing materials. This will be an adventure.

I plan to supplement my bookkeeping income for awhile with temporary accounting work and other consulting/contract gigs.

Watch out 2012! Here comes T-rex. Rawrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

referrals will be your best friend. If you can get a few local firms to use you as a bookkeeping referal you should pick up new clients very quickly. (my current firm always refers to the same bookkeeper)

You can totally do it. Walk into any mom-and-pop mechanic shop (or any business) and offer to do their books. Easy Peasy.

Shoot me an e-mail and I can give you some ninja self-employment tactics.

First book you should read: “Guerrilla Marketing”

@Jeff, Thank you so much! I just sent you an email.

@hopeful, Thank you! That's a great motto! I often remind myself that most things academic and career-related aren't as difficult as that Monster. Best of luck with the exam! Keep at it, and you'll get through it!

Good luck T-Rex, hope everything works out for you. I envy the fact that you're willing to put yourself out there into the great unknown, instead of sticking with a stable (yet shitty) job. I don't know if I would be able to do that.

Hey, Herbster! A good luck *muwaaa* right back at ya! I wish you tremendous success with the tax return deal. I think it's wise to hold onto your day job if possible until you're earning a decent income with the side business. That was my original plan, but it didn't work out so I changed directions a bit.

Hi, Scruffy! Thank you! Venturing out on my own is a bit scary, but far more terrifying is the thought of having my soul sucked dry as I try to fit some mold that's been created for me. No amount of prodding by my shepherd or barking by the sheepdogs will keep me with the flock; I'm not a sheep.

I hope you destroyed REG, and I wish you the best on BEC!
