California Pathway 1 Question

    Hi all,

A co-worker of mine mentioned that if I apply for pathway 1 in 2013 (120-unit requirement vs. 150 units), I’ll be grandfathered into 2014 and my license will be no different than if I went with pathway 2 and had 150 units.

Does anybody know if this is true, or what the effect on a pathway 1 license will be in 2014 once the new requirements kick in?

I’m enrolled in several classes that conclude in June in order to qualify for pathway 2, so I’ll probably end up going that route anyway, but I’m wondering if anyone has any information on this.

    Thanks!

I think I remember somewhere that the only difference between Pathway1 and Pathway2 for California is that your license is only valid in California if you take pathway1, but you can use or register you license for pathway2 if you want in other states.

Thats why California is switching to a pathway2 only after 2013.

But it looks like it might not matter for you if you plan to take those classes anyways. Personally I had my eye set on Pathway 2 from the start because I had a lot of excess units. Do remember that in 2014 the requirements as a whole will change a little. They break down the required classes even more.

So now you also have to consider this as well: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:8lj0_p4hmRIJ:www.dca.ca.gov/cba/applicants/tip_sheet.pdf+&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjaiq4zg_JPFftYrHNhEcZWQMjK75PO0nw3OI4zR2BiSSNBdZiboR2xwsdw1CnoC2On3S1NrujkncIUVw5Rc2_-fpdRb7LTm7ZfKhtJ6lTD4NatE4jl1rymQq6Tq40pZFZl2vvc&sig=AHIEtbQWbS_P6NvBAaafpL71TchqouV28Q

“Effective January 1, 2014, Pathway 1 will sunset, which will leave Pathway 2 as the sole option for licensure. Further, Pathway 2 will require the completion of 20 semester units of accounting study and 10 semester units of ethics study. These units are in addition to the 24 semester units of accounting and business-related subjects. Please check the CBA website at http://www.cba.ca.gov for additional information regarding the new educational requirements.” (CPA Licensing Handbook, bottom of pg. 13)

“If you apply for your CPA license on or after January 1, 2014 you must document completion of a minimum of 150 semester units of college coursework to include a baccalaureate degree or higher, 24 semester units each in accounting and business-related subjects, 20 units of accounting study, and 10 units of ethics education.” (https://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/applicants/self-assess.shtml)

I'm pretty sure you will not be able to get a license in 2014. You will be allowed to take the exam. But won't qualify for any license. You need the 150 credits. Go pathway 2 to be safe.

All licensure paperwork must be submitted before 12/31/13 to get a license under pathway 1.

    Then it's gone.

And please, please, please contact the CBA directly to get definite answers.

Thanks everybody! A71 always comes through with solid answers – great community.

I'm able to apply for licensure under pathway 1 right now, which is why I started to think about all this.

In any case, I think you're all correct in saying that the 150-unit route is safer, so I will be applying for my license under pathway 2 in June of this year, which is when I should have 151 total units.
