Can I still get licensed if I leave public accounting?

I’m currently working in public accounting (one of the big 4 firms) and still working on my CPA license. If I left the firm right now (before passing all 4 exams and getting licensed) could I still get licensed when I’m out in private? Couldn’t I just have a partner or someone who has held a CPA license for a long enough amount of time sign off on my license application?

Has anyone had this experience? Your thoughts, advice, and comments are welcome!

It all depends on the state you're trying to get licensed in. In some states the answer is yes in others, no.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Check with your state board to see the requirements. Many states require that you just do some sort of accounting work under the supervision of a CPA.

    BEC Oct2014 - 85
    AUD Jan2015 - ??
    REG Feb2015 - ??
    FAR May2015 - ??

How long have you worked at Big 4? Have you fulfilled your work experience requirement? In Illinois, the only requirement is that your work experience must be AFTER all your educational requirements have been fulfilled. I had my work experience two years before I passed all the exams…of course…that was a nightmare in and of itself…but I digress. Your Big 4 firm should still sign off on your work experience (even if it is partial) after you leave the firm. Just fax the form to HR when you are ready and they should take care of it.

Awesome! Thanks @BaxterCPA. I have worked in public accounting for 2.5 years. I have met the requirement, I'm sure. Good to know. I'll check in with my state board as well.

Make sure to get that experience in BEFORE you leave! I had a difficult time getting my time signed off and I still work there!

Most states only require you to work a full year under CPAs right? I believe that's how it goes….in that case, I shouldn't have a problem

How about this scenario…..Been working at Big 4 for 7 months….If I were to leave today and worked as a Staff Accountant somewhere for 5 more months, would that be the year requirement to allow me to get licensed?
