Please please please!! I have sent in my resume to various places, but haven’t heard back from most of them. Can someone please help me with cover letter? I really think that my CV could be better and may help in getting interviews.

I would really really appreciate it!!

Sending out blind resumes is a crapshot, with probably better odds in Vegas. While a good cover letter will help, you need to be a bit more systematic when looking for work. Here's the approach I took when my old CPA firm closed its local office down. (It's a modification of the approach I used when working as a musician.)

First, make a list of the local CPA firms you're looking at. In my case, I took the Top 25 CPA Firms list from my local Business Journal. (They publish different lists every issue, and also create a book of lists on a yearly basis.)

Next step, call each of the CPA Firms and find out who the recruiting partner is. Get their name and phone number and the firm's address.

Third, send them a copy of your resume and cover letter. Address it directly to the recruiting partner.

Fourth, one week after you've sent your resume, etc., call the recruiting partner. Ask them if they've had a chance to read your resume. If so, ask them if you could schedule an interview. (Don't wait for them to call you.) If they are unable to schedule an interview for whatever reason (your resume sucks, there are no job openings, etc.), then ask them if they know of any other firms that would be interested. Add the new firm to your list, and start the process with them.

If the recruiting partner hasn't had a chance to read your resume yet, then call them back a week later. If you are doing this in March or April, don't expect them to have read your resume. They have bills to pay, and are probably working for clients.

If you send out a resume and cover letter, you are just one of hundreds they received. You're asking them to do the work and contact you. On the other hand, if you are calling them, you've just moved into a smaller group of potential recruits.

Does this guarantee you a job? No, there's no such thing as a guaranteed job. But it increases the odds of getting a job. Also, by talking to the recruiting partner, you've turned into a person rather than just a piece of paper. And asking about other possible employers increases the pool of firms you're applying to.

    Hopefully this will help.

(If you want help with your cover letter, you probably should include your current cover letter in you email. Same with resume improvements.)
