Can we discuss ages?

I have been curious about the general age range of those who take the CPA exam. I am 41 and sometimes feel like I am an old person taking the exam. Any thoughts on age — are you just out of college and in your 20’s or is anyone here a bit older, like myself?

I was 42 when I passed my final exam. If you use there search function there are tons of fabulous threads about us 40+ folks who took the exam. I'd say at least 15% of the folks here are our age!

Very encouraging – thank you! (I will also search out old threads. Maybe they'll make me feel like I'm younger in this feat!)

At 43, I am finishing the CPA off this month and will be starting an MBA program in January. Graduated when I was 29 moving through a very successful accounting/finance career thus far, with the exception that I have not completed some of the educational achievements I wished to. So here we are getting it done now.

Awesome! I finished my master's degree in 2011. It was challenging. A good friend of mine (now a CPA in FL) was finishing her MBA at the same time and we ended up in a few of the same grad. classes (I have an MSA in accounting.) Best of luck on the MBA!

Good to know that others my age are taking the exam. I really enjoyed the thread that was linked and will search for a few others!

    Thanks!

I'm 41, and I passed it just shy of my 41st birthday … graduated with my second degree 15 years ago. It was really tough to get back into the study mode after that much time away from formal studying.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I passed the last part of the CPA exam and was certified at 51 years old. When I started studying in 2010, I had been out of college 22 years.

    NEVER too late.

I am 26 but I am essentially starting my accounting career as a campus recruit… four years later. I made the decision to get a social sciences degree in undergrad which landed me a lucrative and stable Federal job… but there is just so little fulfillment in the job I decided I needed to do something else. I landed on accounting because I am widely considered the financial guru of my workplace (co-workers in their 30s and 40s ask for my advice in TSP allocation and tax prep) and I have always had a love of numbers. I also wanted to develop a marketable skill, instead of getting a Master's in a simply more advanced social science as many of my colleagues have.

I needed 57 credits to graduate with a second Bachelor's in Accounting through an online program in my home state and I banged out all 57 in 5 semesters (Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring, Summer). My online program was pretty good but wasn't great in terms of campus recruiting, so I reached out to a partner and landed a Big 4 job as a “campus recruit.” I am taking a pay cut (initially) and will definitely see my hourly rate drop significantly, but before going back to school I could feel my brain losing some of its sharpness.

So that's my story.. I will be a 26 year old going to National training with 21 and 22 year old campus recruits in a few months. Obviously I am not “old”, but I am certainly older than other campus hires. I think the maturity and professionalism that working 4+ years FT bestowed on me was a huge part of me landing the job in the first place, though.

I think there's such an age gap because the younger generation (me – 23 with an MBA and studying for my last exam) has added pressure to obtain advanced degrees and licenses in order to advance our career.

    Thanks!

I'm 28, studying for last exam.. although I started studying when I was 25!

Age doesn't matter. If you're a motivated and driven person and you want your license… go for it!

    Justin – best of luck!

Kris – I think there is the same type of pressure even with those who have been in their careers for decades. The pressure of advancement in any position other than a top position will always be an issue regardless of age, although I can definitely appreciate your points!

i am 29 and started studying last November and have yet to pass a section 🙁 i was hoping i would be done before my 30th birthday, so i can have one big “accomplishment” party coupled with my sisters grad school graduation, but looks like that's not going to happen.

@juuustin what part of MD are you in if you don't mind my asking?

Chez – stay with it. It will happen. I decided to take BEC as my first section and it took me a while to pass it. Best of luck to you.

I am 51 and graduated with a BS in Accounting in 2011, I am currently pursuing a Masters in Accounting and will complete it in 2015. So it is never too late. I didn't go when I should have so I am doing it for myself but the benefit has been that my son who dropped out of college has returned to college based on my accomplishments. So it is a win-win!

    FAR - 67, 65, 67 Ugh!!!
    BEC - 65
    AUD - November 30
