I have been studying everyday since March 1st, I mean everyday, and working 50-60 hours every week, I have a test Saturday, a retake for REG, and everytime for the past month or so I go to study my brain doesn’t want to think. I know that sounds crazy, but its true. It literally been none stop. I graduated from high school in 2004 and then went to undergraduate and graduated in spring of 2008 and at the same time I started my Job working 50-60 hours a week

(and I got married). That Fall I started My masters. When I graduated in August of 2011 I started studying for a certification. I received that certification in December and started another certification in January. I received that in Febuary and starting in March 2012 I started studying for the CPA Exam. Its been non-stop and my brain constantly feels wierd and it is extremely hard to study, not because I would rather do something else, but because my brain is not cooperating…SO my questions are can you study too much and can you over work your brain if you do not take time off???

After completing a fast-paced masters program and doing nothing but studying for the CPA afterwards, I certainly find it harder to retain info on the first read. I've done nothing but intense studying for almost two years now. I don't know much of it is because I'm mentally telling myself I need a few weeks off from any form of studying, or if it's because I've actually over studied… but I totally get what you're saying. Marginal utility of an hour of studying has definitely decreased…

No, I don't think its possible to over work your brain or overstudy. I think its entirely possible to feel burnt out, but I also think thats a mental game in itself, and can be overcome with determination.

I totally think you can oversaturate your short term memory… I know when I studied many I night I would almost go into a zombie like state. I would read 3 or 4 pages and have no idea what I had just read. I found when I “hit the wall” any studying after that was completely futile. So at that point, I would go to sleep give the information a day or two to transfer to my long term memory then jump back into it. To be honest, my brain still feels “full” from studying for all these exams. I'm slowly trying to forget all this crap I'll never have to use in my actual job lol.

I think you can too. I had a computer science textbook that had a few pages of advice on how to study comp sci that I think can be applied to accounting. Both comp sci and accounting can be like working a puzzle. The text book said that if you have been banging your head against a wall and trying and trying to grasp something but can't, the best thing you can do is walk away and clear your mind and come back to it later. More often than not when I do that, or when I study something before bed and then work on MCQs on that topic the next day, I am much more likely to be able to grasp the concept, rather than trying to force myself through something when I'm exhausted and frustrated.

I honestly think you CAN over work your brain.. I've hit a wall the last 2 weeks.. I would be able to power study 10 hours a day for the past few months for the other 3 exams, and was fine.. But when I started FAR.. I was just exhausted.. I am struggling badly.. not because the material is hard, but my brain is mentally tired.. I don't know how I am going to study for FAR.. my second time on F4 supplementary questions.. 55-60%.. are you kidding me? 55-60%?!??? I feel stupid.. The material is not hard, I dont know what to do.. my brain is tired, and not functioning.. I tried the gym for a few days, tried doing nothing all day for a couple.. nothing helps..
